Story of male 24 y/o, got braces after big weight loss.

#1 Post by snowblaze »

Why I got braces ?

It all started because I lost a considerable amount of weight, I used to weigh 350 lbs in early 2012. I decided to improve my appearence so I lost 150 lbs in about a year and a half. I always got bullied by my classmates, they used to call me the fat beaver because of my sheer size and my teeth. So I would never smile, never get out of my house and never make friends.

I had an appointment with a orthodontist and he suggested metal braces for two years on the top teeth and one year and a half on the bottom teeth. He said I had a class 2 malocclusion paired with overcrowding, whatever that means. So I got them fitted on my top teeth about three weeks ago. At first for the first 48 hours, no pain ! I felt they were in the way so bad but it wasn't disturbing me that much. Then after 48 hours it started to hurt but it was easily bearable and lasted for 24 hours. Now that it has been three weeks, I don't even notice them, I even forget about them. The only thing I hate is constantly getting food stuck, for example eating a piece of onion because it got unstuck while eating a yogurt, yuck.

I was so nervous about getting my braces because I felt that a guy shouldn't be wearing braces, even after 18. So yes I'm a 24 years old male wearing braces and if you ask me, I don't feel any different. Friends even told me that looks are not just a women's thing, lots of men are spending more time in front of a mirror than some women does. I think it was a good decision and I can't wait to see the results ! I'd like to show you pictures of me before/after the weight loss but this being the web as it is, I don't want to expose myself and get seen by creepers.

So that was my little story, I hope it was an eye-opener for some people. Get braces if you can, it'll be all worth it.Why I got braces ?

Snowblaze, first congratulations on your weight loss! That is remarkable, and as you know you lowered your risk for all sorts of unpleasant health issues. I'm one of those guys who pays a lot of attention to my appearance. While there may be some women who truly don't care, I think most of them appreciate a guy who takes care of himself. It reflects self-respect. Sounds like you have entereed a new phase in your life, and I wish you the best of luck. You'll have women crawling all over you in no time if they aren't already :gavel: !

Hi there, congratulations on the weight loss! As for feeling self conscious about having braces as a young adult, I think the majority if not all people feel that way, for different reasons. After a while it doesn't bug you as much and you look forward to the end result :)
