Pain during adjustments

#1 Post by Felina Grimm »

I had my first adjustment on 10/15 and got the bottom braces put on that same day. It was pretty painful and the ortho assistant recommended that I take some OTC tabs before an adjustment. I experienced more pain after getting the bottom braces placed and afraid I may not be able to handle it this upcoming adjustment (this Wednesday, which will be my first on the bottoms) so I'll probably take some ibuprofen beforehand. Pain after adjustments I can handle. It was during the adjustment where it was pretty bad that I even moaned.

Is it going to be this way after every adjustment? I'm asking because I prefer not to take pain pills so often.

For me, it really varies how much it hurts each time. I would say it was more painful in the beginning because I wasn't used to it. Nowadays, I am the most bothered by the sounds. Grinding down the wire edges *shutter*

My pain is almost always afterwards, especially when getting new wires put in. Still manageable with a tylenol.

I hope it gets better for you! I say tough it out and take a pill after if you need it. It sucks, but you won't take any pills unnecessarily that way.

I had pain in the lower part of my mouth after a recent adjustment where a full powerchain had to be put on. I sucked on a freeze pop and then an ice cube to help numb the pain

I only had a few real moments of pain over my treatment; spacers, my first powerchain, the reverse curve archwire and my first double powerchain (one on the brackets, then the wire, then another powerchain).

Otherwise it was fairly smooth sailing.

I just got back from the adjustment. Even after taking two ibuprofen beforehand, it was still very painful to take out the old o-rings and put in the new ones. Oh, well. I guess my teeth are just too sensitive. The lower fronts were worse, of course.

The pain during my first adjustment was like nothing I've ever experienced before. It genuinely felt like they were ripping my teeth out and my legs were involuntarily kicking out like mad.

Not had any pain at any subsequent adjustment, though. I take a couple of painkillers about an hour before I go and it's fine.
