Transpalatal bar digging into the roof of my mouth

#1 Post by Siannxx »

Hey, i've had my braces for about 8 months now, and my transpalatal bar has been digging into the roof of my mouth for about 4 months. I am kinda shy and tend to have to go to the ortho alone as i have nobody to accompany me with and i've been to scared to tell them, because i'm not even sure if it is wrong? It definitely didnt hit the roof of my mouth when i first had it, though it wasn't far off. I had no speech problems or anything due to it but now it's really bugging me and i was wondering if anybody could tell me if this is normal or not and if i really need to suck it up and tell them to get it fixed. Lately it is really really really digging in and causing a lot of discomfort, and since having elastics on my molar bands which the bar is attached to it seems to have gotten worse, which is weird but i dont know im rambling but if anybody has experience with this i would greatly appreciate it. Thanks

I'd tell them about it. You don't need any infections starting because a spot got irritated. The TPA isn't new to you and this is different.

How long until your next appointment?
Round 3 (lifetime) Damon stainless applied 3/16/20 (after 4 weeks attempting invisalign) On for about 18 months
Night time elastics with invisalign retainers; still...
Double jaw surgery was 6/18/15...
Orthodontics never really ends...
I'm emphatically against extraction orthodontics!

I have a transpalatal arch as well and my ortho makes little adjustments to the width every now and then. It has never made contact with any part of my palate; only my teeth where it's connected.

If you are nervous about asking your orthodontist questions (which you shouldn't be), maybe get in the habit of writing them down before your appointment? I like to tell mine up front that I have a few questions when he has a moment. I have read from my list before because it's easy to forget what exactly you were going to ask.

I also have a Transpalatal bar and I have never had any concerns with it hitting or annoying the root of mouth (but don't get me started on the amount of food that is forever getting stuck up in there... yeek!!). It did however cut my tongue up pretty bad to the point that I didn't even want to talk because it hurt too much.

I would definitely speak to your Orthodontist, as they will be able to adjust it hopefully for you. Good luck!!
