Extraction gaps

#1 Post by LillyS »

Just curious to how long it took for everyone's extraction gaps to close? I had two lower extractions, one side is halfway closed whereas the other side is a quarter closed. I have been braced since the end of January :)

Well it all depends. I had upper 2 extractions and couple of months down another 2 bottoms.

I believe your ortho knows his stuff so don't worry about it! Usually straightening and getting the tooth in line w the arch is done before closing up some of the gaps. Followed by fine tuning before debracing .

But to answer your question, about a year before my gaps were not visible!

My ortho tells me I have a very thick skull  meaning I have very dense bones. It has taken over two years for a gap on my lower jaw to close, but it's nearly done. So I think the answer, as others have mentioned, is "it depends." Best of luck to you!

Thank you! Mine have seemed to have closed quite a bit in a short space of time. I had my second adjustment today and he said we've just to wait for the lowers to straighten out before we can properly start closing the gaps WOOHOO!

I had one that took about 6 months to close, it was about 3mm. The general guideline I have seen is .5mm/month and it seemed to be accurate for me.
