Root resorbtion
I am supposed to get my braces Monday but I am seriously considering backing out because I am afraid of tooth loss from resorbtion. I am 40.
Has anyone had any issues with this?

Re: Root resorbtion
Your individual risk for this can only be evaluated by your orthodontist and dentist based on their examinations, your x-rays, and your history. If you have not already discussed this with them, you should.
Re: Root resorbtion
Thank you! I have and they say I have strong roots and that they will take periodic xrays to keep watch. I guess I am just really nervous.
Re: Root resorbtion
Excellent! Pre-braces anxiety is a well-attested phenomenon on this message board, but it sounds like you're in good shape!
Re: Root resorbtion
I am 37 and that was my main concern before taking the plunge. My ortho assured me that it even though it is a possibility, he hasn't had a case yet in treating over 300 patients. I liked those odds!
Re: Root resorbtion
How is your gum level? I had an unpleasant surprise with gum thinness & recession, requiring surgery while braced, but fortunately no root resorption that I'm aware of. If you have nice thick gums and your roots are healthy then you should be good to go

•Deband November 11, 2015

Re: Root resorbtion
The sturdiness of your roots and gum-supporting bone is a basic part of orthodontic diagnosis. It's one reason that most patients get a panorex and cephalograms before commencing treatment.
Re: Root resorbtion
I am assuming all is well since he told me I have strong roots but I will definitely ask about this again tomorrow when I go. Thank you all!
Re: Root resorbtion
I didn't realise that was a problem either. Sometimes I wonder if it's better not knowing anything beforehand. :-)
