Fixing Crossbite Without Appliances?
I got braced two months ago and my ortho gave me turbos/bite blockers on my top back molars since I need to fix the crossbite. He never mentioned anything about giving me elastics or using a palate expander, so I'm wondering if it's possible to correct a bite problem with only braces.
Did this happen to anyone/anyone you know? Or is it a must to use other appliances along with the braces to fix bites?
My ortho also told me that the bite blockers have to stay until my bite is corrected so how long will that take? I don't want to have bite blockers for two whole years.

* I don't want to have bite blockers for two whole years because of the constant position my mouth is in. The bite blockers prevent my mouth from closing all the way and it gives me a slight lisp. Though I'm used to it by now, I'm worried that the prolonged time with my mouth open will change my jaw profile. Will it actually change my jaw shape in any way?
Re: Fixing Crossbite Without Appliances?
What can be accomplished with braces/bite blockers/etc. depends so much on your exact case and your treatment plan that these are all questions for your ortho; nobody here can answer them with any usefulness.
Re: Fixing Crossbite Without Appliances?
Sirwired is right, of course. Let me just add that braces are an "appliance," and elastics wear is a totally normal part of bite-correcting braces treatment. Bite blocks are commonly used in crossbites to allow the uppers to move to the outside of the lowers (without the bite blocks, your lower teeth would, by definition, be in the way of allowing this to happen). More specific concerns about your case should be addressed by your ortho.

I have those on myself because I kept biting the brackets (anterior crossbite and overbite) in the beginning and it's going to be a year. The lisp is horrible and I might have them on during the whole treatment. You may or may not have other appliances used besides the braces, but you shouldn't be surprised.
Re: Fixing Crossbite Without Appliances?
Everyone is different, of course, but I'll share my experience. I had a crossbite on my entire right side and it was fixed within a year (more like 8 months) with just my self ligating braces and diligent wear of my class 3 elastics (and Acceledent). I think the arch wire did all of the work to fix the crossbite, the elastics were for my underbite. I never had molar buildups or anything, just bumpers on my bottom front teeth for a month or two at the beginning to keep my top teeth from hitting the brackets.
Early on they thought I might need a crossbite elastic on one stubborn tooth but the tooth eventually cooperated on its own.

I had a crossbite and mine was fixed with elastics. I had a molar hook on the inside of my top teeth and the elastic was connected to a hook on a molar in my lower teeth. I had the elastics on both sides.crossbitten wrote:I got braced two months ago and my ortho gave me turbos/bite blockers on my top back molars since I need to fix the crossbite. Re: Fixing Crossbite Without Appliances?
I had crossbite on both of my lateral incisor. I guess it was due to crowding, they were behind my front incisor and canine. I had build up on molars for about 7 or 8 months. When my upper lateral incisors had enough space to come forward, the buildup was removed, but the lateral incisor were still behind the lower teeth. When i was still wondering how the teeth were going to 'jump' over the bottom teeth, one morning when I woke up with some teeth soreness and went to check it up, i saw one of my upper lateral incisor was already in front of the bottom. I guess he make the 'jump' during my sleep. The other did the same a few weeks later. I am 19 months into treatment, i have yet to hv elastic yet, but i am sure i will have them towards the end of my treatment. So, there were no other appliances to correct my crossbite other than archwire and buildup.
