Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Ultimately, I decided the costs (mouth continually ripped to shreds from braces, concerns about bone loss) outweighed the benefits.
Siobhan, your teeth look lovely, you must be happy it's all over. In your message you say the problems associated with the procedure outweigh the benefits? So do you think that it's not worth all the hassle? Just wondering cos I'm in the stages of deciding.

Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
So, I had my ortho consultation yesterday to make a plan for my canine. My ortho reckons that I will need to have the premolar beside the impacted canine pulled to create space. None of that brace moving just extract a healthy tooth urgh! Initially, he was quoting 3 premolar extractions to even everything up (I also have a premolar missing on the bottom left, its not impacted there was just never an adult tooth but the space has closed a bit). I was stunned at the idea at the age of 40 having 3 good teeth removed when I kinda need them, however that didn't seem to be of concern to my ortho. Maybe I'm being too precious about my teeth, I dunno and he obviously knows what he's talking about. He said they work with canine impactions routinely and I'm sure he's good at his job but I just can't have a minimum of one tooth removed to MAYBE get the canine down and into position, not even a guarantee. I have no wisdom teeth and a premolar missing, so with another 3 gone I would be down to 23 teeth (24 if the canine works).
Anyway, I have 2 months or so to think about it as I have to wait for the NHS to give the go ahead. I might just ask to have the canine extracted and either go for an implant or bridge. I'll keep you updated on what happens next.
Does anyone have any experience of having to have healthy teeth extracted to make room for the canine? I seem to remember one or two within this thread but I don't know if the extraction was to create space.
All the best,
Eve

Thanks, Eve. Yes, I'm happy its over. Sorry if I wasn't clear - I think the procedure was worth the hassle and I'm glad it worked. My teeth aren't 100% perfect and the canine is tilted and doesn't match the other side. My Ortho could have worked tweaking the canine more but I didn't think it was worth it.Eve255 wrote:Ultimately, I decided the costs (mouth continually ripped to shreds from braces, concerns about bone loss) outweighed the benefits.

I will say my canine was pretty well positioned - it was directly above the baby tooth on the cheek side. I imagine that where the tooth is located and how it's positioned will factor into your decision. Your Ortho and Oral Surgeon can probably help you with that. Good luck.

Hi
Just joined this forum..
I had surgery back in July to attach the chains to my impacted canine and braces fitted 2 weeks after that. Recovery from the surgery was longer than I expected ..today the chains were 'activated' .. I wonder now how long it is going to take for my canines to come out...

Yup, I keep thinking of that 'end goal' where these braces will be off and my teeth will be all one big happy family.

Well. After about a year and a half of trying it's over. I have to get it my impacted canine pulled. Now time to decide if I want an implant or not. I'm leaning towards not.

Oh I'm glad to hear that Siobhan, thanks for clarifying. It must be so strange and exciting to have a brand new tooth after all these years, that's great it worked out well for you .
My impacted canine is at an angle so it would be one of the more lengthy processes and possibly not work in the end. My dentist said it was in a good position but not too sure what he meant by that as it is lying across the gum at a 45 degree angle lol, my ortho also didn't bat an eyelid at its position and seemed to think it would work out. Anyway, I'm not 100% sure but think I'll just get the canine removed and cover the gap somehow, can't be doing with having other healthy, well positioned teeth removed as it kinda defeats the purpose of trying to salvage the canine in the first place. If they can do it without extracting other teeth, then I might just go for it.
All the best

I can understand that you are disappointed and don't want an implant (esp cos of the cost) but personally, I sort of like the idea of an implant and might do that myself. I also heard something about a mini implant? Not sure if that would be good for a canine though.millersgirl wrote:Well. After about a year and a half of trying it's over. I had a bridge for 22 years and I suppose it wasn't too bad, the one I had was quite ugly and too big, it also put a bit of strain on the 2 teeth it was attached to. But nowadays, you'd probably get a really nice, lightweight one that would be more functional. I'm sure you'll find something you're happy with as an alternative.
Good luck

No I wouldn't get a bridge...I'm thinking of pulling the impacted and the regular canine and just closing the gap. I'm "only" 29 and not sure I want to deal with an implant for the rest of my life. I'd rather just be done with it.Eve255 wrote:I can understand that you are disappointed and don't want an implant (esp cos of the cost) but personally, I sort of like the idea of an implant and might do that myself. Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
I've just had the surgery to uncover my 2 upper canines yesterday and tomorrow I'm going to have my chains 'activated' I'm worried for this process so can anybody tell me what it's like? Does it hurt? I'm especially concerned as I had the operation so recently...

Yeah, I can understand that. One thing though, which regular canine would you need pulled also if you go for closing the gap option? The one on the other side or the lower canine and did they tell you that was to balance it out?

Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
My top canine is impacted so my dentist said to pull the other top canine to balance things out but my orthodontist said he would pull the premolar and leave the canine. I'm feeling really frustrated and I really don't want another oral surgery. I regret even starting this stupid process.Eve255 wrote:
