Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Thank you so much Freyja, you have no idea how much better you comment makes me feel. I think being so ignorant about this whole thing and not getting much info from my ortho has made things worse in my head.

Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
kimmyann - I'm not exactly sure what the reasoning is for spacing my appointments out so much, I really feel zero pressure on it ever now (unless I'm eating something that pulls it) - ever since about 2 weeks into activation, I feel nothing. He said that the skinny wire that the chain is attached to pulls towards the thick wire, and it has 5mm to go to be at the thick wire, but it doesn't seem to me that the skinny wire is pulling at all. He had me hold a mirror to show that the 2mm of chain are showing, but there was chain showing after activation, and some of that 'progress' seems to me that it really could just be the swelling going down ... I don't know, I always have a hard time trusting professionals of any field, so I can't tell how much of this is that part of me, and how much is that things aren't actually progressing at all.
Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Hi, I am having surgery to expose my impacted canine on Monday. The hospital has already said that the op will be under general anaesthetic. Could someone give me an overview of what the first week is like, is there an adjustment period? And also what happens at the activation and if that brings pain, pressure or an unusual feeling.
Thank you in advance.
Thank you in advance.

Excited to say that i have noticed my first new link today!!!!!!!
Olliegray, on the way home my mouth bled a lot. I was swirching out gauze and papertowels what seemed like every 5 mins or so. Of course both the ortho and surgeon are an hour away from my house. When i got home i washed my mouth out with warm salt water ( which i read later wasnt suppose to until day 2) no harm done though. I had stitches between my front teeth and front tooth and insisor from where my palatte was cut open. I laid on the couch and watched tv the rest of the day. I only took 800 mg ibuprofrin. I was prescribed hydrocodone but didnt need it. My mouth just felt like the palatte had been burned with hot food for about the next week. I ate jello, mashed potatos, macaroni and cheese for day 1. Day 2 i ate masked potatoes, gravy, and pudding and my husband took me to waffle house and i ate an omlete and gravy biscuit. By day three i was gradually adding normal softer foods like krystal burgers. I was just eating slower and making sure to keep foods on opposite side of my mouth. I wouldnt have had to be so careful if i wouldnt have had the baby canine pulled also. The palatte was really not sore or painful and was sown back up very close to my teeth that it was hardly noticable. By day 6 i webt to ortho and had the chain activated. That caused my teeth on each side of gap to ache and be very sore for 2 days. Then i was good again. I really didnt experience pain from the surgery. I wasnt put to sleep. I did gas and numbing only. I think i could have drove myself home and i dont think i would even do gas if i had it to do all over again. I had the surgery done on thurs and went back to work on the following mon. I am a highschool teacher. My speech was a bit different for about 2 weeks, but only certain sounds like the word "she" or anything similar. Now that the swelling is all gone my speech is normal again. Its really not that bad. At least it wasnt for me. The surgeon who did mine had an excellent reputation and now i can see why. I just had my surgery nov 5th and i already have noticed a new link. If you need any more info just let me know. I usually check this daily.

Woop for moving links! Mines come even more forward since that pic now too. My appointments are around 8 weeks apart, next one is December 4th when I'm thinking I need some festive coloured elastics lol!
I thought a lot of you have the roof of your mouth cut? I didn't have any gauze or anything literally cut the front, stuck the chain on then sewed it all back up. I'm glad that others are done in the same way it seems to be pretty effective x

Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Interesting to see how everyone is progressing.
I had my first x-ray in about a year to see if the tooth moved. But they haven't looked at it and I wont know til my next appointment. Today I've been feeling more pressure. They didn't change the band that pulls the tooth on the inside. But I really hope they say it's been moving and not long again. I have a big bump in the roof of my mouth from the tooth inside so Im guessing its close in?
Just keep thinking of the finished product. Cause I just wanna yank these things out atm.
early next year would make it 2 yrs my bottom teeth are pretty much straight just bringing them closer- I have a feeling theyre going to finish up with it soon.
I hate they dont tell you what's going on.. I just go in change bands and done - out. When I ask I don't get much answers. Anyone else feel like their ortho operates like the CIA?

Hmmm, i am begining to think my new visible link was wishful thinking. I could see it under a thin layer of gum and i thought if its that close it will be on through in a couple days but nope. Uggh. I am getting discouraged. My next appt is dec 9th and i really want some extra links by then.
Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Hi, I'm sorry to hear that your ortho didn't feel it was possible but maybe it's for the best anyway, I hope you get the best result. I'm in the opposite position where my ortho wants to go ahead but (after waiting 2 months for the NHS to agree to pay for a portion of the treatment) I am now completely put off with the whole impaction treatment thing and just want my canine out and an implant put in it's place (I'm 41 now). I just feel I'm too long in the tooth , to go ahead with it all even tho I know some people my age have done it.foreverbraced wrote:Update time? Asked my orthodontist if it really was impossible to get my canine out, again, he insisted that it is not possible and absolutely refuses to even try getting my canine out. Tbh I saw it coming but kinda wanted to cling to the small possibility of it . Anyways, now we're going with the original plan, which was to get the premolar in place of the canine. I really am not pleased with this as it will mean that the two sides of my mouth will have uneven sizes, but again I guess there's no other way.
Anyway, I just wanted to ask you if your ortho was keen to do your original plan and did he think it was a completely viable plan because my ortho wasn't keen about that at all, and he also thought i would possibly have to get other teeth removed to even it all up, although not if i didn't mind an uneven smile (he also said I would need teeth out to get the impaction treatment, one of the reasons I didn't want to go thru with it). I actually don't mind having uneven sizes as long as I don''t need teeth removed and the annoying gap is closed up. I appreciate my ortho obviously being a bit of a perfectionist but at my age, I really want to hold on to as many teeth as I can!
Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Hi everyone...it's been a while since I last updated but I wanted to post some good news and that is....
my canine is finally peeking through my palate!
It's been about 2 months since I activated this pesky canine and finally I can confirm that I see progress!
Granted it still has a long way to go...but I can see the pointed tip of my canine and basically the general outline of my canine. Ahhh I'm so happy!
I was worrying so much and comparing past photos and whatnot but ahhh....I still can't believe my tooth actually moved. :D

Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Hi everyone! I have an impacted canine and currently I'm looking for somewhere to get orthodontic treatment. As I live in downtown I found the treatment here is so expensive! More than $6000... How about you guys? ...Do I need to search for some orthodontists in suburb?
Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
I paid $5,000 just for top only braces and another $500 for oral surgery. My dental insurance also paid $500 for my surgery, but my braces i have paid on my own. Orthodontic care isnt cheap, fast, or easy. If i need bottom ones later i am estimating it will cost an additional $1500-$2000, but hopefully i wont need them.
Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Hey guys
Just found this website and it was great reading everyone's stories its so interesting reading how the way of treating a canine is different in the UK where I'm from and America (which is where I'm guessing most people here are from) since I needed my surgery before braces and there's no laughing gas for dental procedures here which I wish there was!
For me I was told about my impacted canine at 14/15 years old, I'm 19 now but I'm only getting my braces put in next week so it's taken a long while to get started as I'm doing it on the NHS (which I'm so grateful for or I'd be paying so much) but it took awhile to get the ball rolling. I also needed 2 surgeries to expose my tooth as my first surgery was unfortunately unsuccessful it ended up taking 3 years most of the time waiting for the tooth to expose itself.
But thankfully just yesterday morning I had thick bands placed between back molars to create space at the back for braces and in the evening I had my baby tooth pulled out to make space for the chain,it hurt terribly having both done in the same day though and I surprisingly had one hell of a root on the baby tooth haha but my ortho doesn't seem keen on answering questions so I have no idea if I'm getting full braces or just the top and the chain next week but anyway hope it all goes well for everyone! xx

Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
Hello all, been a canny while since I posted on here so thought I would update with my situation. I had an x-ray a few weeks ago and my tooth hasn't moved a significant amount so have made the decision to get my impacted canine taken out and an implant fitted. Both my ortho and myself agree we have spent an adequate amount of time trying to pull the impacted tooth and so have to draw the line somewhere as I don't want to be braced for years and years. I am more than happy with this decision. Having the surgery done tomorrow under "happy air" sedation. Christmas dinner will be fun with a sore mouth! I will update this page with how it went and a before and after pic for those of you that like those kinda details teehee. I have been reading the past few pages and there seem to be quite a lot of success story's so I am hoping my experience can give hope to those who need to go along plan B with their impacted canines.
Re: IMPACTED CANINES CLUB
I had my surgery this afternoon, "happy air" sedation was great and the procedure only took around 20-30 minutes. Numbing effects are starting to wear off now but so far I aren't in any discomfort (haven't took any pain relief as yet) and the surgical sight is a lot neater than I anticipated . I hope my experiences can shed some light on those of you who's canine hasn't been successful in erupting. I have attached some pics of my mouth before and after the surgery and also of my souvenir tooth (that's a 5 pence piece for size comparison )!!
