hey guys i got a impacted 2nd molar so not sure if im in the club hehe, but its a much more rare thing i think and from what i read looks like same kinna procedure to getting it down. just had the exposure surgery recently and in a week getting the top braces and getting it hooked up, is that part painful?
also reading here some people had misfortune of the chain braking which id like to avoid, is there something we do that contribute to that happening like eating or brushing in that area...? just wanna make sure take any precautions to prevent that
thanks

When i had my exposure the oral surgeon checked for mobility and told me no its not fused and yes it will move in. Did you have any of those answers from your oral surgeon?

The OS did say that it "appeared" that it was fused when he went in to attach the nub and remove the baby tooth. But the Ortho said it MAY still move, It has moved but not alot. If it is fused - would it move??? I feel pressure and lately intense pressure on that tooth inside. When I went for my visits I asked if pressure is good she said yes thats very good. I wouldn't go through all this pain while knowing there was no chance of it coming down.

So I don't know what to think now. Hopefully I'll have answers when I go back to chat with the OS cause thats whats frustrating over all, is the lack of information. It's like my ortho was shooting in the dark to maintain the braces - No foresight or plan?

It's heartbreaking but it happens. My oral surgeon said it wiggled just fine and chipped away bone, made it a nice path, and after a year of trying it still didn't move. I'm having mine extracted next week.

It is heartbreaking, I agree. But I was more peeved at my ortho's lack of bedside manner and back tracked her statements to remove herself from what she initially stated. If you say this is whats going to happen - I'll be disappointed but will be able to plan and deal with it. Just sad that it shows she doesn't care about her patients...

Well my canine is officially extracted. After two years, started at 27 and I'm now 29, I'm officially an impacted tooth failure! Hopefully the bone graft takes and all that's left for this debacle is the implant but with my luck I'm sure it won't be that easy.

I completely regret trying and wish I would've just had it extracted initially, to those on the fence. My teeth have all shifted immensely and the gap where my itty bitty baby tooth was is now the size of .... I don't know probably two molars.

This whole process has been a disaster and again if you're on the fence...don't be hopeful. Just save your self the time and thousands of dollars and just get the damn tooth pulled.

I'm in the same boat as you so I feel your pain miller. My op is next week. And my whole process thus far with this tooth has been painful and very costly. Just want this all done with.

Hope you recover quickly!

Really sorry millersgirl, i hope the rest of your treatment runs smoothly, please post a wedding pic, I love weddings!! On a more positive note I'm pleased to say mine is working! Now I am happy I am on here and I'm so happy I have read a lot about how "things get worse before they get better" because I hope this is correct for me!!
Basically I had the bracket put on my canine last appointment but they have always left my incisor bracket free because the roots were all a bit close. This has meant that naturally the brace has pulled my front tooth towards the canine tooth so my teeth are a bit squiffy!!! The canine has moved loads and hopefully next week they will bracket the incisor so it all evens out! :D here are some pics xx
The first is from 8th December.

This one is now xx

Ditsy,

When did you have your exposure surgery? I am just curious how long it has taken for yours to show? Was it on the lip side or pallate? I had 2 links taken off within the first 2 months after exposure and now it seems like it wont move????

Just under a year, the movement was always a few days after an adjustment, the first time it moved I had fallen asleep on the sofa, an hour later I woke up and felt something really odd and the whole thing had moved! I think that was after my second adjustment. I panicked and thought it had came off my tooth! It's at the front of my gum, my orthodontist is pretty heavy on the pulling though, she's nearly had me in tears before! I told her I would rather give birth again, but it might help explain why the movement has been so rapid xx

Had my implant fixture this morning. My right side of my face is quite swollen and it's slightly achey. They had to take bone scrapings from elsewhere on my jaw as it was a little thin. I believe this is the worst bit over and done with!

Kimmyann, how long has it been since you've noticed any movement now? If it's been a few months, maybe ask for an x-ray at your next appt?

Laura9287, I had two fake teeth custom made and put in - I got married last year, so had them in for that plus a good while. The one, they needed to remove after the wedding (July 2015) so that they could do the 'expose and bond' to attach the chain to the adult tooth - can't have a fake tooth and the chain at the same time - the other, they had me keep the fake tooth until yesterday because it's now about ready to have the chain put on and they need to prep the area. I work in a professional job, I'm 29, the fake teeth definitely helped me deal with the situation. Now that I have the two gaps, I worry about things like if I needed to go on a job interview. However - people do seem to recognize that you're working on self-improvement. It's not like just having big gaps in your mouth and not doing anything about it, they'll see the braces and automatically understand that it's a work in progress. I don't feel judged by others really, moreso just by myself. I get ID'd a ton!, before I got the braces on (age 27) I never really got carded for drinks etc., now even with a wedding ring and in a full suit, I get carded every time.
Attaching an untouched pic to show that you really can't tell with the fake teeth - there's a bit of a shade difference, but I think because I had them on so long before the wedding and I drink coffee / red wine pretty regularly. May be an option for you though? They can't be used for chewing, they'll come loose - what they did is make the teeth to match, attached a bracket to each, and attached them to the wire. They just hung out on the wire, fitted into my gum line. My ortho included this as part of the 'package', we'd discussed it as an option during my consult because he knew all along I would be getting married mid-process.

For everyone who's having to go with plan B, I really (of course) hate the idea of having to throw in the towel and get implants - but better to know sooner than later, and it seems like at least most going with the alternate route only have a year or so into it. I've been in braces now since January of 2014... still no visible canines. I think I'd have a total breakdown if all of this money (upwards of $7k) and all of these years were for nothing, and back to square 1. Still may happen though. For my 'activated' canine - I had 3 links taken out of my chain yesterday, so ortho says that's almost 4mm of movement since having it activated in October 2015. Second canine had the fake tooth (pontic) removed yesterday, I need the soft tissue to heal up from the fake tooth sharply pushing up on it and then I'm back in there mid-April for the ortho to laser away a hole in my gums/expose/bond that adult canine, and activate it hopefully the same day. This second one is right at the gum line, curious to see how long I'll have that hole in my mouth - hopefully not too long, it's definitely a self-esteem killer for me to have teeth missing on both sides right in the front.

My canine has not moved since the 2 links were taken off so its been over 2 months with no movement. I am going today to have a panoramic xray to see if and how much it has moved. Dr said if it hasnt moved then i may have to go back to oral surgeon and have bone removed and it wiggled. Uggghh. I dont mind the surgery its the money that bothers me. So hopefully this pan shows good news and this tooth is on the move. I was really wanting it in by this summer because i am due to deliver my baby boy and didnt want the huge gap for pics with him.

Kimmyann, regarding the cost - my oral surgeon had said something to me about how if I end up needing more bone removed, he'll do the follow up surgery free of charge - ortho said sometimes they offer that because it's really them correcting what they should have done in the first place - maybe something like that could be brought up, if it does end up being the case - hope your appt shows good news!

I'm a member of the impacted canine club too. At 28 I had my right baby canine removed with my wisdom teeth since the adult canine erupted on the roof of my mouth. I had invisalgin at the time and was going to do 6 months of metal and chains to pull the adult canine in place, but I backed out and stopped all treatment.

By the time I was 33 I was really self-consicous of my teeth. The space from the pulled baby tooth had doubled and the adult incisor had fully erupted on the roof of my mouth behind the space and 8ver to the left . It had also flared and rotated the tooth it was behind. On top of all that I had gaps on the bottom and top. So, I finally went to an othro.

I am 6.5 months into a 3.5 year sentence and my bottom row is nearly done. We made the space for my incisor bigger with a spring and still have the spring in place to keep the space open. My incisor just got a bracket two weeks ago and we have a power chain on it to move it in place. Once it is in the right position my ortho believes I have a year more braced. Either way I am thrilled with my results now.

hi all.

im 32 and had canine exposure surgery by a maxillofacial surgeon in july 2013. I've been in braces since. i was initially told it would take 18 months for the canine to be in place. our wedding was october last year. my mouth was an absolute disaster. buck teeth slanted over and a gap the size of 2 molar teeth. i was absolutely distraught. I've never been offered a fake tooth for the gap. the baby tooth was taken out in january 2015, so i have had a gap since which is getting larger and larger and larger. i had a fake bridge of 2 teeth to fill the gap for the wedding and veneers on 11 other teeth to make it all look 'ok' for the wedding day. stress i didn't need. i had the braces put back on 2 months ago and not much has happened. i am so over this. my ortho says it will take another 7 months but in his terms that will be 14 months at least and who knows what will happen by then. the whole thing will probably go belly up. worst part is i was never told this would happen. id really like to see all the pics everyone is posting but i can't see any. I'm happy to put some up if someone can tell me how. the effect having this gap in my mouth is bad. i have no self confidence i don't even want to leave the house or speak to anyone. i can't believe I'm almost into the third year and experiencing this disaster. i wish i had never bothered with this.

Hello everybody...I'm back with a little more positive attitude. Sorry I've been so negative. Wedding has come and gone and I am so grateful for the fake tooth in place of the canine. I didn't show teeth in my photos but I felt much more confident when talking to my guests! I LOOOVE the fake tooth. You can't even tell it's not real. Where was this guy two years ago when I first got the canine pulled??!
