White spots- treat it with braces on or after?

#1 Post by LongJourney »

Guys I was wondering if white spots can actually be treated or are they premanant???
My teeth were pretty clean before I got braces and now...

My teeth aren't yellow lol but I got white spots on my canines... It's really bothering me and my molars got something behind it...

I honestly brush my teeth in the morning and ALWAYS at night, missed a day or two but not more then that...

I was thinking of getting a teeth whitening or deep cleaning after I get it off but they're really starting to bother me that I wanna do the baking soda method right now. I know they won't go away but I just wanna reduce a little bit at least

What advices do u guys have?? And if anyone went through this, plz help a sister out :D

I would talk to your dentist. I know that way too much flouride can cause white spots, otherwise I'm sure your dentist will have answers for you. BTW, I'd be surprised if most people notice. I've had my braces three weeks now and and most of my friends haven't said a word.

I haven't experienced white spots but I have experienced bad plaque build up/orange staining around the brackets that could only be removed by a clean at the dentist. We are always our own worst critics and I'm sure no-one else notices, so try and not worry too much!

I'd definitely recommend against any form of whitening/baking soda treatment until your braces are off - you'll end up only whitening the area around the bracket which will leave a colour difference when the braces are removed.

Definitely do not do any whitening with brackets on. Wait for them to come off.

Way too much fluoride causes fluorosis, but that occurs from ingesting it while the tooth is forming. It doesn't cause white spots now.

You most likely have demineralization, an early form of decay. Fluoride will help (regular or high-fluoride toothpaste, mouthwash, etc) prevent further decay and can reverse it to an extent.

As for camouflaging the spots, after braces come off have your teeth whitened. If you use a home whitening system, be aware that the white spots will whiten faster than the rest of your tooth, so at first it makes it look worse. Keep whitening and eventually the rest of the tooth will catch up.

I brush my teeth at a minimum of 4x per day and floss at least twice and just noticed that have some whites posts on a few of my teeth. I don't see how it can possibly be the cause of tooth decay. How do you know if it's too much Floride or if it's the beginning of tooth decay and how do I reverse either I've had my braces for 3 weeks

Like Aspiring said: it's probably decalcification of the tooth enamel, which can be caused by plaque build-up. My dentist has said that there's no way to completely reverse it, and it seems like paying extra attention to those spots while brushing with a fluoridated toothpaste is the best way to go.
