Vacation with braces??

#1 Post by LongJourney »

Hey guys

So my family and I are going to Kenya for 3 months and I was wondering how that would work with braces?? Obviously I'm going to let my ortho know but I'm worried that he would say no or something.

Well, he/she shouldn't say "no"... you definitely want to let them know though. And probably bring along a pair of ortho wire cutters if you pop a bracket, but luckily if the braces aren't new, bracket pops are pretty rare.

I dont think it's going to be a big problem. Your ortho will probably make your braces a little tighter and you just wont get them tighten for 3 months. The wires will hold them in place, there just wont be progress.

I doubt they would say no but I do wonder since you will not have an adjustment during that time how that will impact your progress. I'd also recommend an emergency kit incase you need to make minor adjustments. The other day I had to purchase tweezers so I could reposition part of a ligature that came off the bracket. I just came back from Vietnam 14 week vacation. My orthodontist had zero concerns & didn't think it would set me back progress wise. I brought lots of supplies with me. Lots of wax, superfloss, supersoft toothbrush. Brought tweezers & nail clippers with me in cases I broke a bracket. Advice from my orthodontist, don't get repairs overseas if I broke something.

You might want to check out http://www.dentakit.com/ which is run by Lynn, our board admin. There is an emergency kit there -- see http://www.dentakit.com/oremkit.html which might be good to take along.
Have a great trip!

Update
My parents talk to him and it looks like I'm going to be doing 27 months instead of 24. This is just sad
