I vote you should file them down... if your ortho thinks you have the enamel to spare. But I dunno, how much do they bother you? Some people like the youthful look!jfriend33 wrote:Lets take a vote! All your lower incisors have them, so I think you could go either way. Mine wore down unevenly because of my crazy crowding on the lowers, so I'm definitely getting the teeth that still have bumps filed down. And, I'm over 40, so I guess it is okjfriend33 wrote:Lets take a vote! Should I have my mammelons filed down? The net says its wise for folks under 40 to not do it and preserve their enamel. Re: Anterior open bite, retreating 20 yrs later, intro and ?
Dr said to double up on elastics on the open side and wear the closed side only at night... Ok...
They also said my brackets up front were placed slightly gingivally and that accounts for some of the curve.
Still don't feel right wearing class 2 elastics on the one side. It is extruding my lower left 2nd molar.
Lastly Dr said he wants to shape my teeth now because they want the correct natural shape of my teeth and will over correct the openness.
I don't agree with that because they should wear down if the bite I closed. Whatever I'm not the professional lol

Last two TADs gone! NO SCREWS! YIPEE!!!!!!!!
Today they put steps on both of my archwires by my back molars (like there use to be when I only had back braces).
They also went with powerchain on top now as well. Also only doing class 2 elastics for 2 more weeks and then I just do the triangle on both sides.
Also next appt they are going to start bending the archwire and changing bracket position for finishing.
What is the best style of retainer for anterior open bite? I have read mixed reviews. I see that the essex style can be best because it can close the bite even more. But I've also seen hawley styles work great too with built in habit appliance?
We are going to go with permanent retainers for sure on top and bottom just not sure if I want hawleys or essex over the top. I am thinking that it should be essex for the first year then switch to hawleys since they last longer.

Re: Anterior open bite, retreating 20 yrs later, intro and ?
American Orthodontic elastics seem superior in quality to me compared to ormcos. My galapagos giant tortoise elastics are actually 0.5oz stronger though.
Anyone else notice quality differences? These new ones seem more uniform, the ormcos seemed hit or miss with their strength.
So I had a head injury a few days ago. Luckily my braces were not affected. But I cannot open my jaw fully without discomfort. I fainted and collapsed and have a small cut on my temple.
I also do not care for the power chain quality it seems to fade in color. Very annoying!

I just read your whole story. Wow, what a huge difference in your teeth from then to now. Your bite looks so good now! Thanks for sharing your story, interesting read. I had a very slight open bite and am currently wearing elastics in a triangle like you. My appointment is tomorrow and I think I may be done.
Re: Anterior open bite, retreating 20 yrs later, intro and ?
Power chain that doesn't fade in color finally. And triangle elastics 6.5oz heavy.
Debrace date set for June 6th!
Had some filing in between upper four front teeth and reduce some mammelons. More shaping to come.

Your teeth are looking really good!!
I have an upper and lower bonded permanent retainer and also an Essex which I wear at night. I have read on here that positioners are also good. My ortho does not use them so I have been to someone else too but they do not prescribe them either. Have you been told what retainer your getting yet?
Will just have to hope that my bite stays closed as there is no way I am going back into braces again.

What are positioners? You mean for bracket positioning for bonding? Or the rubbery mouth guard retainer? I had one of those once when my retainers stopped fitting and it did not work well at all for me. I hated it!
I am doing permanent bonded upper and lower retainers, and then either essex or hawley on top, not sure which just yet. Me personally I would prefer essex for the first year or two as there are many reports of unintentional bite closure from essex (which would reinforce my molar intrusion). Then once things are settled then maybe switch to hawley because they last longer. Plus essex would be less noticeable.
I am not going to rush things. I need a little more space closure on the upper left k9 and between my lower front teeth (black triangles). I also have one molar that is slightly in cross bite that needs to be fixed. The back four upper/lower molars will never touch they said, maybe one day they will settle in but it is their insurance policy as they said.
I still would like to find another Certified Oral Myologist just to make sure that my tongue posture is good. The ortho says it is, but I'll be darned if I am going to get this bite perfect and have my huge tongue mess it up! My idea was once the bite was perfect, install perm retainers upper and lower, and debond upper 6 braces only and see if there's any relapse.
I do know one thing, which bugs me, and my bite always feels more tight in the morning than it does at night but ortho said that is totally normal.
Had my 90 day cleaning today. It went very well, I had tons of students huddling around again in disbelief in the power of TADs/myofunctional therapy.
Re: Anterior open bite, retreating 20 yrs later, intro and ?
Hey mate. Positioners are rubber mouthguards - which help maintain bit retention apparently.
I have been researching the best vertical retention for open bites for the past few months (as I am so scared will return), but all the orthodontists I have been too other than mine say the same as you either a Hawley or Essix. I actually just spoke with an orthdo today who works at a uni and he also said Essix is the best. So seems like I will just have to start trusting the orthodontists!
Are you located in the US? I am in Australia so the use of TAD's to correct open bites non-surgically is relatively new here. I know in the US and Canada TAD's have been around much longer so there is much more data. I found it really hard to find an Ortho here who would treat me non-surgically. Going back in 4 weeks for a follow up so fingers crossed all goes well.
Your treatment is going well. Definitely agree no point hurrying things along and getting out of the braces too soon. Fingers crossed it stays stable.
Anyway keep me updated.

I want to see your pics and progress. I have anterior open bite too and maybe my orthodontist uses tads for finish my treatment.
Re: Anterior open bite, retreating 20 yrs later, intro and ?
Yes, I am in the US. They have been used here for some time....but the screws used to require pilot holes and settling, no instant screw and load like they are now with the self drilling types. I have to say there are still MANY orthos that have not been brought up to speed with the use of these. Any dental related appt I go to I always try to share my progress so they can spread the word!ajs604 wrote:Hey mate. Positioners are rubber mouthguards - which help maintain bit retention apparently.

You never really had any tongue habits so I am not that concerned with your relapse. I am however very paranoid so will continue to meet with a certified oral myologist.
So you have heard essix is best too. if you think about it, it does make sense that bite closure would be a side effect because of the added molar buildup from retainer contacts.

I have been in your shoes! Once you make a few more posts you will be able to see photos, and post photos! Just stay active on the forum a bit longer!Sakurita wrote:I want to see your pics and progress. I have anterior open bite too and maybe my orthodontist uses tads for finish my treatment.

I see. Well, i'll try to stay active.
Thanks you :)
Thanks you :)
Re: Anterior open bite, retreating 20 yrs later, intro and ?
Oh wow I didn't realise they needed pilot holes, sounds pretty crazy!
I did read somewhere that Essix can induce an open bite as you can't close your teeth when wearing them as opposed to the Hawley. However, saying that I read it on a forum so you could say it was no an accurate source. I would say the pros for the Essix are that they are practically invisible but a con would be they crack easily. I already have a crack on my last molars, that's probably to do with clenching. Still it fits well and will get checked when I next go to the orthodontist. I wear mine every night and use chewy bite aligners to get a better seal, my orthodontist told me it also helps maintain intrusion during the renetention phase as well.
From talking to you on here I have also decided to go and see an oral myologist as well, even though I am sure I don't have a tongue thrust but feel it makes sense to get it checked out.
