Bring jaw forward without surgery?

#1 Post by nicoleth »

Hi guys, this is my first time on ANY forum, so I hope I've posted this in the right section (if not, sorry!)

My question is, is it possible for an adult (20 years old) to move their lower jaw forward without surgery? Like any appliances at all? My profile doesn't look good since it appears my chin should be forward by approx 1cm, and yet my lower teeth are forward enough (so its like my chin sinks in).

I should also mention that I've already had treatment- I had a palate expander to avoid extraction (yet, the crowding was still to much and I had to pull 2 upper teeth), and then braces. But I only realise now that I should have probably extracted 4 teeth, but we avoided that, since those days we thought the ortho who could avoid that was our choice.
Also, after watching a video by Michael Mew about correct jaw/tongue posture, I realised its my open-mouth breathing 24/7 thats probably caused this growing up (wish I knew this as a child!!) So I'm making a conscious effort to change this habit since I don't enjoy having this downward rather than forward jaw, and I can see the physical difference it has made to my appearance.

Do you have overbite (do your top teeth cover your bottom teeth completely or almost completely when you close them and smile)? When I got braces and they made the molar buildups to correct the overbite my lower jaw was moved forward a lot immediately. I has just been one month since I started braces but eventually when the deep bite is corrected I hope the position of the jaws will remain like this.
