Braces, Invisaligns, Extractions, Expanders??

#1 Post by thegolfer86 »

For those adults that have/had an underdeveloped/narrow upper jaw & slight to moderate crowding or even crossbite, what non-surgical treatment did you go through?

Two orthodontists plans include jaw surgery in conjunction with braces to make room & align a perfect bite, although one of them said without doing surgery his plan would be 4 premolar extractions during the first or two month of braces. The General DDS doesn't like pulling teeth if he can avoid it and would see where I'm at after 12 months on a 24 month plan. My wisdom teeth were removed 2 years ago and Jaw surgery isn't an option for me. I'm not as concerned about getting the perfect bite but more of getting my teeth aligned & eliminating severe overjet. Could Invisaligns do the job or is it best to go with metal & likely tear up my gums/lip line due to the overjet?

Hi! sounds like you and I have similar cases.. *currently on 2nd round of braces 15 years apart* I have pretty bad overjet on the top and crowding on bottom.. i had my upper 4s (first premolars?) extracted a month before braces put on.. ceramic on top metal on bottom. ortho said I could do invisalign but it might not get best results and could take longer. So the plan is to bring the top teeth back, since i got those 2 removed and straighten out the bottom (which will bring them forward) and will also widen my smile- its very narrow as well! I did so much research on finding a great ortho and I trust him with this treatment plan.. and yay no surgery! :) good luck to you!

Oh and I forgot to add he did put me in rubber bands the same day I got the braces put on! To help close the gaps faster I would imagine. He said next appt I get powerchains.. woohoo!

I have Damon SL braces with an arched wire to help expand my upper jaw but my back molars are in an ideal position already its just moving the other ones where they need to go. This will reduce my 6mm overjet to 3mm but my ortho will see how it goes may have extraction of two uppers later if needed.

I had invisalign for 2.5 years and my ortho made my bite terrible with these. I'm now in Damons with a new ortho and I can honestly say I prefer braces over invisalign. The pointy attachments on invisalign irritated my cheeks more than my current brackets. I'm six months in with braces.
