i need braces help

#1 Post by akabraces »

Hi all,

I'm so grateful to have found this message board. My dentist and ortho both said that I need braces (I'm 26). My ortho said I can get them on whenever I wish--here's the thing though. I really want to get them on to speed the process along AND b/c the dentist said I needed them when I was younger but my mom wouldn't let me get them so I feel like it's about time. BUT my college 5 year reunion is in May. Do you think I should wait until after my reunion? I'm afraid people will make fun at me at my reunion if I have braces, I know that's funny, but maybe I'm just too self-conscious. Any ideas/support/advice? Thanks for your help!

I would go for it. I'm also 26 and I have had crowded teeth all my life. My parents could not afford to get me braces when I was a teenager, because my sister was starting college at that time. I am getting my braces on this Thursday. I can't wait for the people I graduated with to see me on my way to finally having a beautiful smile. I think it's a great accomplishment!! And just think, when we hit our ten year reunion, we'll be looking better than ever!!! :D Best of luck on your journey!

I agree, "Go for it!" It's college, little kids. Your friends should be happy for you. It's not the same kind of, "Look at metal mouth over there" world anymore. You're friends will probably really like your new smile. Plus, you can show them you've been up to new things.

I would definately get them now while you have the energy and passion needed. Just think, if your treatment was say a year and you heald off getting them until your reunion was over, when a year from now passed all you would be thinking is 'I coud have been out of them by now I could have been out of them by now...'

Definately start now, and best of luck!

If you don't have braces in May they will think you will always have teeth with problems, but if they see you with braces they will know you are fixing your teeth and will have a lovely smile soon. I say go for it ASAP, the sooner on the sooner off!

Hi,

I'm 27, and I've had braces on for over a year now. Nobody has made fun of me yet. I help out with the youth group at my church sometimes, and we kind of tease each other about our braces (more than 50% of the regular youth group attendees have braces!) but in a nice way. Really though, we compare orthodontic stories and hardware, and see who has the craziest stuff in their mouth. Also, we chat a lot about lig colors. The kids love that there is an adult who understands what they are going through, and the pain that happens sometimes right after an appointment, or who understands the excitement of getting new hardware, or the disappointment of not getting their braces off on time, or whatever it may be.

At work, the people around me are always excited for me to arrive after I've been to the orthodontist. They love seeing the new colors I have chosen, and seeing how my progress is going.

So really, having braces is a non-issue these days. For me, it was something I had to do to fix my bite and my jaw. It's a medical necessity. I would suggest you go for this now. If your ortho and dentist are both telling you that you NEED braces, then it is probably for a good reason, and not just for aesethics.

Best of luck with your decision. I'll be curious to hear what you decide.

I'm 28 and I work....I got no comments at work, and my friends where either not saying a thing (I'm shy so they know me very well and prefer not to ask) or the others which with I'm closer are either say :oh I was thinking about them' or my very best friend says: there where plenty of kinds in States with them- she was in US for 6 months.....14 years ago.

Now about the reunion: I got my braces in June...never though about any meetings, I just wanted my TMJ gone. Now in 6 weeks time I will have 120 years aniversary of my High school (I am not sure guys if you do thins thing in States?) most of the people will be there (inclueding half of my family  ) and in May we should have class reunion- 10 years after, let's say A-levels exam.

I'm not consern about this....it's better now, then later. My parents wanted my to have braces 10 years ago, at the last year at high school, but then...I would be the 2nd!!!! (I'm not kidding) kid with braces at school...that was no-no..... I guess in US you are more used to seeing people with braces.......and to be honest after 4 months I do not see any problem ....I feel confortable...the only regret is why I haven't got them last xmas? I was that close!! I would only have 8 months left now!

GO FOR IT!!!! your freinds are no longer kids

thank you all so much for your replies.
everyone seems to be in favor of me
getting braces sooner rather than later.
this has given me alot to think about.
please feel free and welcome to continue
to share advice and stories as, since you
you all know, this is a big decision and
a hard one. thanks to everyone, i'm so
lucky to have found this group!

I agree with the others, go for it. Your teeth will probably be fairly straight by May, so they will look nice in those braces.
Had Damon 3 / Smart Clips for almost 2 years
Now in Hawley upper 10 hours/day, permanent lower retainers
