I am 18 years old and I am getting braces on July 21, and my orthodontist uses Damon braces. At my consultation, she explained to me that the braces don't require colored ligatures, but that I could get them if I wanted to.
What I'm wondering is, is there any downsides to having colored ligatures while using Damon braces? Will they cause me more pain? Will they hold bacteria, and in retrospect, be more "dirty"?
Any other pros and cons you guys have for choosing to have ligatures with Damon braces are welcome.
All answers are appreciated.

As its one more component and they stain im sure they can hold bacteria, but if you brush and everything im sure they will stay clean.
Also depending on color they may make your braces stand out more.

Re: Colors for Damon Braces?
I had self-ligating brackets for almost 5 years, but I will say they were slowly replaced with traditional metal brackets as time went on and they needed to be repositioned, and were held in place with either power chains, metal ligs, or traditional ligs...but I found that colored ligatures (hot pink, mediterranean blue, dark purple or black showed the least amount of wear. I have read that silver power chains and ligatures are 'stronger' , but that was never told to me by my orthodontist.) I started out with 'smoke' colored , but they were discontinued, and honestly, they stained every time I ate curry or something with tumeric. I didn't have a problem with red wine or spaghetti sauce, personally, but curry got me every time (bummer!) If you don't need ligs or power chains, or can get by with metal ties, I would definitely recommend those...they are relatively problem free!

I don't understand why you would want ligatures with self-ligating brackets.
Two of the advantages of self-ligating brackets are that they are less noticeable and easier to clean around because they don't have ligatures. You would lose both advantages if you put them on just for decoration.
Another advantage to self-ligating brackets is that the appointment intervals are longer. With regular brackets, you'd be seeing the orthodontist every four to eight weeks and getting the ligs changed each time. With self-ligating brackets, you'd have appointments every eight to twelve weeks. Ligs can stain a lot in four weeks. I can tell you from my experience with power chains that they will positively glow after twelve.
