teeth moving quickly, worried they'll fall out

#1 Post by Roxxm »

My concern before braces were that my teeth were extremely loose and some could be easily been plucked from my gums like flowers. Xrays showed what looked like a huge hole on the left side of my upper jaw, the one molar in that quadrant of my mouth shifting onto it's side. I had braces in my teens but lost my retainer down the heating vent in my bedroom withing 24 hours of getting it, my bizarre parents decided it would be a good learning opportunity for me to n ot get another retainer and my teeth shifted back to crooked very quickly. I had been warned by my general dentist that my roots were stunted because of moving them with braces and then them shifting back naturally without the retainer and that braces could and that braces could worsen the problem. He recommended I see a specialiswt to get slow moving braces, but the ortho he referred me to put me in damon. I had the approval from a periodontist that my gums were healthy and I wouldn't have to worry about my teeth falling out. On week 6 and my teeth have shifted extremely quickly, they are sore and very loose. If my teeth were falling out before braces, how can I possibly hope that this second round of braces isn't going to cause me to loose teeth sooner?

No, it won't. The first time I've ever had braces, I was SOOOO worried that my teeth were going to fall out because of the movement. However, this is perfectly normal, but DO NOT LOSE THAT RETAINER. You don't want your parents giving you another 'learning opportunity' and another round of this, do you?

Just know that there is risk of root resorption with braces. If your teeth move too quickly, you could have problems down the line. Make sure your orthodontist and dentist are paying attention to the health of your roots throughout treatment. Without healthy roots, your teeth will fall out.

I don't think anyone here is qualified to answer your question, and I think your concerns need to be addressed directly with your ortho given your history. Best of luck to you.
