teeth extractions for braces?!?! sunken face? Nervous

#1 Post by giamia101 »

Hi everyone,
Apparently, I am in need of teeth extractions for braces because of crowding and protrusion. However, I am EXTREMELY nervous because I have done research on the risks of teeth extractions include TMJ/TMD, sunken face, thinner lips, receding chins, and basically an extreme facial change. I do not want to sound superficial, but I am worried bout my facial changes. I mentioned this to my orthodonsits and my family, but they think it's crazy that "teeth" can cause all of the following above. I've seen videos and pictures of those who NEED extractions and I feel that I do not need it as much and it will definitely give me a negative change. Do any of you guys have any stories or know anything bout teeth extractions.

Whether it is positive or negative I do want to know everything about this procedure.
I have images attached incase you want to see my teeth.

Here's what I think (keep in mind I'm not a medical professional)...

I think that when there's actual moderate to severe crowding, any changes in one's face or profile will be either non-existent or virtually unnoticeable.

I had pretty severe crowding and cannot notice the difference in my face or profile post-extraction.

I think people who elect to have extractions and notice some crazy facial change either did not really require the extractions or would have seen a change with orthodontic work regardless. But again...not a medical professional...not a dentist.

I've had braces twice (on my second round currently).

I've had SIX teeth extracted in total. I haven't noticed any of the scary changes reported online. If I really wanted to, I might imagine that my face looks slightly thinner (NOBODY else would agree with me) but I think that's as likely due to not being able to chew and losing some muscle tone in my face. Which is entirely reversible.

If you want straight teeth, go for the extractions.

Most extractions go just fine. That's not to say that all orthodontists are perfect, or all patients are happy with the final result, but it's folly to reject extractions just because of scare stories on the internet. You might want to check out the following thread as a counterpoint: http://www.archwired.com/phpbb2/viewtop ... 13&t=46445

Certainly obtain more than one opinion, but remember when you search that your goal is the best treatment plan, not just finding an ortho that tells you what you want to hear. As in, don't ask for a no-extraction plan... just present yourself and see what the ortho comes up with. Feel free to ask an extraction ortho what precisely the extractions are for and what will happen if you refuse them, and as the non-extraction ortho how he/she plans to deal with the possible non-extraction side-effects the first one mentioned. (The risk of relapse is the most common, but there can be others, depending on case.)

When I see your X-Rays it seems you have a bimax protrusion. Your profile looks like mine before my treatment.
I was treated with 4 extractions and the changes have been only positive.
My chin hasn't become receding after the treatment, but more pronounced.
Here's my whole story : http://www.archwired.com/phpbb2/viewtop ... 13&t=50304
Don't hesitate asking me questions!

Do you want more photos? I can send you some of my profile before/after : because extractions are recommanded in some cases, in particularly in bimax protrusion.
