What reactions have you had about your braces?

#1 Post by sosomoto86 »

Hi,

I'm due to get six month smiles on Tuesday eeek. Only told a few people though, just wondering whether I should warn more. Will it be really noticeable? What did your family/friends say when they saw yours for the first time?

Nothing much really, the only people that really said anything were a few coworkers who either worked with me closely for hours, or saw me brushing my teeth at lunch.

And that was either because they had braces before, or were just curious, I think most people just don't care enough to mention it and more people realize than you will probably ever know.

But it's not like anybody views it as strange, unless you come across somebody who think there is such a thing as too old for braces, and usually thinks once you are an adult, the time has passed.

And those people are completely wrong, I rather like that I will be enjoying a beautiful smile in a few years, while if they "missed the window", they can let that idea take away the chance at a beautiful smile.
Lots of crimes here

1. The upper molars bite too far ahead of the lower molars

2. Missing teeth #s 9, 14, and, 29

3. Open bite

4. Upper midline left of center

5. Lower midline right of center

6. Upper and lower teeth not straight

Sentence - 24 months, turned to 27 month.

Braces removed since 11/06/17

Well people started looking at me with a mixture of curiosity and disgust like I was some exotic australian insect or something...Some even expressed their disaproval openly by stating that I looked ridiculous and questioned my mental health. My work colleges would just turn their head when they would see me go by and I would often hear them giggling around the coffee machine while pointing in my direction. My family members stopped eating with me at the same table because the sight of me chewing food was too much to bear.......Oh sorry, you're asking about the actual reactions, not anticipated....Yea, nobody gave a crap. I was actually a little dissapointed tbh.

Haha thanks, I think I'll have the hardest time adjusting to them, I doubt many of the people I see ona daily basis actually care. I just want them on now!

No real reactions. Not even my friends seemed interested, and they're a group of some real ball-breakers. Thought for sure I'd get ribbed by them, but nothing.

The only reaction I've gotten so far was a few weeks ago at the bar from another guy with braces who was around my age. We talked and laughed about it, a moment of camaraderie I suppose, and that was it.

Yeah, pretty underwhelming, to be honest.

You get used to them pretty quick. I hardly got any reactions from people. The first person to actually say something was a 14 year old girl, a friend of my son, who also had braces. It was cute. I think she doesn't like her own braces so seeing an adult managing and being confident with them made her feel better. I find that most adults don't say anything because they assume we are so self conscious we‘d just die of embarrassment if someone said “hey, you got braces".

What I do notice now that I have them, is how much I scrutinize other people's teeth! I can pick out someone who's had braces treatment, someone who had them on top only and I wonder why they didn't do the bottom too, and then adults who have seriously messed up teeth and wonder what held them back from getting treatment. Parent had no money when they were a kid? Lack of insurance? Money issues now? I think it terrible that most USA dental insurance doesn't cover adult orthodontics.

Bottom line, chances are no one will say anything. Even my husband hardly mentions them.

Lol! I was just starting to think "holy crap you need to get the hell away from those arses!!!". Yeh, nobody really cares, more people ask about them recently though, mostly asking when they're coming off because my teeth are looking good xxx

My boyfriend is the only person in my social network who has seen The Braces as I only got them fitted last Friday. I have spoken to people in shops etc though and I haven't noticed anyone staring at my mouth yet. However, I think it's because the clear ceramic braces aren't very noticeable when I talk, only if I laugh or smile. At the moment I'm doing the closed mouth smiling thing and covering my mouth when I laugh.

The only person who has brought up my braces is a coworker who actually has an appointment scheduled to get her own braces later this month. Otherwise, I've gotten no comments, nobody staring at my teeth, etc. And I've got metal brackets and a bit of a lisp, so I'm sure people are seeing them. People just don't care.

My girlfriend doesn't care and nobody says anything. I'm actually kinda disappointed. Maybe it's because I just smile and laugh as usual and don't try to hide them.

Nobody cares - almost annoyingly so, hah! People barely notice, too. I used to think that I'd feel and look super awkward in braces, but now that my teeth have straightened out quite a bit, I smile a lot more than I used to. The only people who have said anything are ones who had been thinking of getting braces themselves.

"OMG you are the best thing on two legs, those braces really turn me on, get over here and lose those clothes!"

OK, so maybe that was a dream I had after a particularly nice pizza.

At first there were a lot of fuzz about it especially in my workplace. Most of my co-teachers kept on teasing me because I'm on my early twenties and I have only got them now. Yes, it's a thing for teens here where I live. Then my students noticed it, especially the change in my pronunciation (the consonant sound /s/ ). For my students, they see it as amazing, and they changed their way of seeing braces. It isn't a fashion accessory, as what they have been thinking about all these years.
