I use Crest Pro-health along with a Waterpik, which I could not recommend enough! It gets all the nasty junk out quick and easy. :)
Re: Mouthwash vs no Mouthwash
I agree that the waterpick is the best invention since sliced bread.
My routine is waterpick, then sonicare toothbrush on clean/whiten, then at night I add fluoride mouthwash made for braces...can't remember who makes it. I am at work or I'd go look. (wait, should I be working??)
Seriously, I come here sometimes on my breaks so I can keep my sanity through my brace "sentence". I hit my 8 months this weekend! YAY!

Oh man I just bought a litre of this Oral-B pro-health mouthwash, thinking the extra fluoride would be good, and now I see it has Cetyl Pyridinium Chloride..... I don't want brown stains on my teeth :( :( Does it happen to everyone who uses it? It says it is preventable with proper brushing...

I use ACT anticavity or ACT restoring about half an hour after brushing. I chose them because they have the highest concentration of fluoride I could find. (I don't use it right after I brush so that I can keep the toothpaste residue on my teeth as long as possible.)

My teeth were stained pretty badly even with the use of a waterpik & electric toothbrush. My hygenist removed the staining, she recommended I stop using it immediately to prevent staining again. Apparently Crest pro health is known to stain too.

Biotene. Helps with dry mouth as well. That has my vote.

Re: Mouthwash vs no Mouthwash
I've tried them all! When I was in braces, I used Crest Pro-Health, and I didn't notice any staining with the brackets. I don't know if the ingredients were changed in 2008-2009, because I started getting terrible brown stains between my teeth and in any crevice, like someone else mentioned here. My hygenist didn't know why and asked if I was drinking a lot of tea--I've never been a tea drinker! The stains came off, thankfully, but not without some serious elbow grease.
I tried Listerine, the inside of my cheeks peeled. I have oral lichen planus, so that may have been the reason, but it was super drying. I didn't like the feeling Biotene left in my mouth, but no reaction. I ended up trying Natural Dentist's Healthy Gums and I do like it. It's naturally sourced, non-alcohol and their fluoride rinse (I haven't tried it myself) is ADA approved. I floss, brush with Squigle Enamel Saver (no SLS), use a Water Pik and use Natural Dentist.
If all else fails, warm water and sea salt works for me, too.
