ceramic -vs- metal on the bottom

#1 Post by sedona »

I have had top ceramic braces for 6 weeks.
My initial plan was to go ceramic on the bottom.
It was not possible to get the bottom ceramics until my deep bite was corrected.
Now I'm wondering if I should switch and go with metals on the bottom.
Any comments or suggestions?
Thanks -- I REALLY appreciate all the information that I've gotten from this site.

I have ceramics upper and lower and am very pleased..very little irritation..only a couple days with slight rubbing..i've had them 2 weeks..and am happy with the look of them...just a personal decion whatever you choose to do will be fine..I have to say though if having ceramic on the bottom meant waititng til the deep bite closed i probably would have just gone withthe metal on bottom just to get things going...
good luck!

I also have ceramics on top and bottom. While they were putting them on I regretted my decision, seeing that they are indeed bigger than metal. As time has passed however I don't believe I have made a mistake. I have had minimal irritation, and no canker sores to speak of. If I had been able to change my mind right before getting them I would have gone for metal, but it's a good thing I didn't since the ceramics are working out fine. Good luck with which ever one you choose. :)

Hi Sedona, I too have a deep bite and am in the process of waiting a month so that my ortho can fit my lower metals. It is a personal choice but it seemed to me that metal lowers are not so noticable as metal uppers, so it's not a problem from a purely cosmetic point of view. Plus they apparently work more quickly, are stronger, cheaper and smaller. So that's my 2 cents :D

Thank you for all of the responses!
For whatever reason, I'm having a difficult time with this decision.
Every time I decide one way, something new arises and I switch.
This is really strange since I quickly decided on braces, and then ceramic braces.
I do not know why this is so complicated! :?

I am in the same position. I've just got the ceramics on the top, but have to wait at least a month for the bottom brace to be fitted.

I think my orthodontist has already put me down for ceramics, but it was only since getting the ceramics on the top - and seeing how much bigger they were - that I wondered if metal would be more comfortable for the bottom?

Go with what you feel comfortable with. I wanted ceramic all around NO METAL!!! I had to wait 4 months for the bottom brackets to go on but I didn't care. I think the all clear looks great and would make the same choice again.
