I know I made it sound kind of bad, but the surgery is pretty much always outpatient (some surgeons even do it under local anesthesia!), relatively inexpensive, usually easily approved by insurance, and most people have less work done than I did. (I had work done on some cartilage way up high; most people just get the septoplasty and/or turbinate reduction.)

Thanks sirwired. Although I am still not to keen on getting this surgery, I may even prefer SARPE then, or just continuing mouthbreathing....

Yes Anna, we seem to have the exact same situation. If I try to keep my mouth closed, it feels like I'm struggling to breathe a bit and then my mouth opens up again to compensate... I think that may be when the poker chip comes in handy... Keeping your lips together .. And still allowing a little space for extra air :)

Sorry guys, SARPE won't fix the nasal issue. I asked about it, but ended up with the surgery. I feel a lot better now, and I can breathe. It's an issue with your septum, or sinus.

With my airway it was both. I had a CT scan (for an unrelated issue) and could clearly see problems with my septum, which I had fixed. But my nasal passages didn't really open up until I had a LeFort I. If I had just one surgery, it would not have fixed the problem.

Each person is going to be different.

I am going to see an ENT next thursday to check whether there is a reason why I can't breathe well through my nose. I keep you updated!

Hello!

I went to the ENT yesterday and it turned out that I have a deviated septum and something else (sorry, I don't know the english word for this). He suggested septoplasty and turbinate reduction will help my breathing. I will go to another ENT for a second opinion, and if both doctors agree, than I think I will go for the nose surgery.
The ENT thought that these surgeries are going to help my breathing more than palate widening.

Boy, do i have lip incompetence?! The bummer is that mine got much worse with braces. I sought ortho treatment to fix minor lip incompetence and gumminess in my smile. But now, after 3 years of braces, i have a really bad case of both. Keep talking to your ortho about this concern.
