Re: Ortho treatment exacerbated gummy smile and strained chin

So, today I went back to ortho to talk about things. We talked and when I mentioned TADs he said he wouldnt mind doing that and he would do whatever to make me happy. That was a huge relief! But before we do TADs he wants me to do laser gum contouring to reveal some more of my teeth and to see a jaw surgeon for a sliding genioplasty. I was supposed to wait at home and they would let me know how much the gum contouring would cost. They left a message telling me that the gum contouring would be at no charge but they would charge me extra for the TAD procedure to get rid of my gumminess. UNBELIEVABLE!!! This ortho really needs to work on his delivery of expectations. They way he said he'd do anything to make me happy sounded like he meant he would do whatever extra work to get me where I was satisfied. Im livid!

Been looking through some of my pics before braces and the regret is just killing me! I shouldve never gotten braces. All I want now is to ask him to put my teeth exactly in the positions they were, but make them straighter and the bite fit. I feel like I threw out $6,000.00! Just see my casual before braces pics and tell me my smile, not the teeth themselves but the smile itself, was not much prettier than now. Im devastated for a huge mistake.. :(

Not trying to be the devils advocate, but it looks like the height of your gum in your current picture and your graduation picture are about the same?

I would suggest going to another orthodontist to get a second opinion and bring all your records (if you haven't already). Maybe having another opinion/explanation might help you. I had a terrible experience with my first ortho. I had invisalign for 2.5 years and ended up with a class 2 bite, overbite, overjet, strained chin and gummy smile (super similar to you!). I started with crooked teeth, narrow arches, and slight class 2 on one side. I ended up switching orthodontists and I'm so much more confident in his abilities.

I'm so sorry to read about this. If it helps at all, I think you look beautiful and your smile still looks great! Yes, a little different from before, but certainly a great smile. I'm so sorry you are so upset! :(

thanks for the reply.
The two latest pics are my before. The 1st page shows my afters. On my graduation I had gumminess on the middle to posterior teeth, whereas now it is a wall of gum across the front. So not even close to about the same. Huge difference in the front!

Im so sorry to hear you had to go through 2.5 years of braces to end up worse! Hope this one does the trick for you! :)

thank you for the reply and for your kindess! :)

The latest pics where you can see my face are both my befores. The afters are in the first page and I think really changed my facial structure and smile for worse.

I see you just started your treatment. I wish I had one exactly what you are doing: forums to learn from other peoples mistakes. Wish I had learned as much as I know now before I started the treatment.

Any updates?

Wondering if you have an overbite now? Maybe some class 2 elastics would fix your problem?

Why can't your ortho just use a reverse curve wire to reduce the gummy smile? That's what mine did for me, no TADs necessary, and I'm also in Damon braces.
