Study Abroad for 4 months... with Braces?!?!

#1 Post by amoroso »

So I am a graduate student studying architecture. There is a study abroad option to Buenos Aires, Argentina. I really want to go... but one problem... I have braces... and study abroad is a semester long (4 months). I would really hate to miss this wonderful opportunity because of braces. I am not sure if my doc will have them out before then. Anyone else ever been in a similar situation. I've been pretty good with my braces... just a few broken brackets but that was at the very begining..

Talk to your orhtodontist. I know people who have gone away for a long period of time and not had adjustments, it delayed their treatment for a month or so but it was okay overall. Just make sure you talk to your ortho first :) I can't see you having to miss the opportunity just because of being braced.

I'm in a similar situation. I'm deferring University next year, and travelling to the USA for about 4-5 months. I told my ortho this a couple of months ago, and asked him if it's a big deal if i miss 3 or 4 appointments. My ortho said that it's not desirable, but by all means do it. He said anything over 5 months could be an issue. But at the time I asked my ortho about my trip (in June 09), he said my progress is going well that I might be lucky enough to get them off before then! So I'm praying I do.

Oh man, oh man! Studying abroad was one of the greatest experiences of my life, and it's something that I would recommend to anyone and everyone. I'd do whatever you have to do to make it work out. Your treatment is important, and probably comes first, truth be told, but I wouldn't want to miss this opportunity if I were you. See what you can do and be sure to let us know what happens!

Even if you’re nervous before going abroad, please do go. You will not regret it. I’m lucky that my study abroad experience went so well. I have completed my high school summer travel programs from Abbey Road Program. I know I’m going to miss that place, and the lovely people I’ve met here. This experience has given me so much to take home that I can’t even begin to describe it. I highly recommend studying abroad even if you’re scared.
