Are my braces being taken off too early?

#1 Post by Welshrarebit »

At yesterday's adjustment my ortho told me that my braces can come off next time, which is 12 months into my treatment time. She originally told me 2 years treatment time. I'm obviously thrilled that they'll be coming off but I only had a powerchain put on in January, and while my teeth were straight by last summer, the overjet/bite is still a work in progress. Even now I can feel my teeth moving because things are tender. My jaw aches a bit. At my adjustment she told me she was really happy with my progress. I am too and think that things look good now.

I don't want to doubt my ortho but has anyone else had their braces removed the moment that things are corrected, or is there usually a period for stabilisation (which is what I've read about on this forum)?

I could ask the ortho but I'm worried she'll decide to just leave them on to shut me up!

I had to laugh at your last sentence - trust me, your ortho wants you out of braces! So go ahead and ask. I am not certain there is a magic moment when everything is completed. I'd guess that the ortho thinks you will get there in the next few weeks and that may include stabilization. Hopefully you will get your retainers the day the braces come off, or shortly thereafter. Those are the real stabilizing agents! Congrats on your rapid progress, and best of luck to you!

Do you have progress pictures of your teeth? If I remember correctly we had similar problems and treatment times. I still have mine for at least the next few months - I'm 15 months in. :(

Your teeth look great. Any chance you started off with a class 2 bite, and what your progress it? I started with class but, but it's taking forever to fix. On top of that my lower jaw is slightly underdeveloped so there isn't a lot of room to move. My bite is still off so that's whats taking so long, but my ortho keeps saying that once it feels good I can get my braces off. If your bite feels/looks good -then I'm sure you're ready.

Yes, class 2.

My lower jaw is smaller than my upper jaw and I was advised that only jaw surgery would correct it, but that felt too drastic for me. The functionality of my teeth was fine, I never had any mechanical problems, I just wanted the upper teeth straightened out.

I would definitely ask your ortho if you're concerned. Your pics look great, but he/she would know what they're talking about.

Talk to your ortho and let them know. I thought I was voicing my concerns with my ortho and mine came off to early.

I can't really judge your teeth by the pictures but I can also not really tell much difference between before and after, although my best guess is first picture=before. If I had teeth like yours I would NEVER wear braces, seriously!
