Ok, time for a few more examples of "we're just not speaking the same language":

"Band"
Ortho's definition: A metal ring that goes completely around a molar, and to which brackets or tubes or hooks or TPAs or RPEs (etc., etc.) are attached.
Me: When I was a kid, I always dreamed that I'd have a band. I didn't think it would be this kind. *Sigh*...more adulthood disappointment.

"Intrusion"
Ortho definition: Moving a tooth into the bone.
Patient's definition: An inappropriate or unwelcome addition or presence (see also: braces/your life)

"Tooth eruption"
Ortho definition: When a new tooth comes in.
My definition: an angry outburst, typically when a patient believes their ortho is either taking their braces off before everything is absolutely, 101% perfect, or leaving them on too long because the ortho is a needless perfectionist who's aiming for 101% perfection. For the ortho, there is a very brief window of time during which they are not at risk of a potential tooth eruption.

Ortho: "bicuspids"
Translation: "bye-byecuspids" if your crowding is over 8 or 10mm

"Prophylaxis"
Ortho: "You should continue with regular prophylaxis throughout treatment."
My first response: "Not that it's any of your business, Doc, but I'm married and monogamous, so no worries."
My subsequent response: "Oh, you mean getting regular teeth cleanings. Gotcha. Yeah, I knew that."

"Masticate"
Ortho definition: chewing
What they really mean: Something you are able to do approximately 25 days each month during treatment, or potentially never if you have bite blocks.

Archwired Community: "Go for it! You'll be glad you did."
Translation: "Misery loves company!"

Hey coco, thanks! Sorry for the tardiness, but I completely missed that you'd replied. You know, I worry that I'll post one too many of these and it will just be a bunch of random things that only I thought were funny...no one else. So I'm glad it gave you a giggle. Have a great day!
