Introduction - 32 y/o wanting to reverse damage caused by extraction orthodontics

#1 Post by Lull »

I'm here to learn more about other peoples experiences about reversing extraction orthodontics. I have the classic retracted chin, thin unsupported upper lip & extra prominent nose in profile. More problematic is subsequent various health issues, one more comparatively minor - yet infuriating one - being low frequency tinnitus that an ENT suggested might be linked to tension in my jaw. I realise that I now have a much deeper overbite than when I first had my braces removed, with one of my lower teeth touching the back of & pushing forward one of my front upper teeth. My lower premolars are pushing my upper premolars inwards when I bite down which has made my smile very narrow with black triangles at the corners of my smile & a feeling of a huge, unnatural tension to achieve a smile that looks natural to other people.

After learning about orthotropics etc I have become very interested in whether any improvements can be made despite my age. Everything seems to be getting worse - I have been diagnosed with hypermobility syndrome with many joints subluxing regularly... now my jaw is starting to cause problems too. From an aestheitc perspective, aging is revealing the problems with my bite & emphasising asymmetric facial features. It always feels like I don't have enough space for my tongue & I think my airways are restricted in my nasal area and throat. I really wish my family had known about how orthotropics & how to create horizontal rather than vertical growth in my maxilla. Still, I am going to make a concerted effort to try and fix this issue.

Hi Lull,

I am really sorry to hear about your experience with Extraction/Retraction Orthodontic Treatment and that you are having detrimental health and aesthetic issues resulting from receiving this in my opinion outdated Orthodontic technique as a teenager. Based on your post, it sounds like you are ready to reverse and fix this issue and you are definitely aware and realize that your health and aesthetic problems are being caused by your Extraction/Retraction Orthodontic Treatment. I speak from personal experience with 4 premolar extractions with retraction for Orthodontic purposes as a teenager (I am in the 30-40 year old age-range) and am currently reversing the Extraction/Retraction Orthodontic Treatment due to the negative continuous facial problems, TMJ, inner ear disturbances, balance, lack of tongue space, postural, narrow/small mouth, and other health-related issues very similar to what you are experiencing. From my experience, it took me many, many, many, years and a lot of appointments to numerous health and cosmetic professionals/specialists to finally realize that this outdated Orthodontic Extraction/Retraction Treatment that I had as a teenager was the root cause of all my health and aesthetic issues. Check out Dr. William Hang at Face Focused Orthodontics in California, U.S.A. (website: Facefocused.com) he is the expert at reversing Extraction/Retraction Orthodontics. - Tath4746
