Tooth getting more crooked with braces

#1 Post by adisa »

Hi,

I am new in the braces world, but this site helped a bunch! Anyway, I am into my braces treatment for a little over 4 months. I have self-ligating braces that are supposed to fix my crossbite on my upper jaw and traditional braces on my lower jaw. 3 months into the treatment, though, I've noticed one of my front incisors in my upper jaw is getting more crooked. Before I freak out, I just wanted to check with other if they experienced it too, what it could possibly mean and do you think it will continue getting worse? Is it possible that the bracket was positioned incorrectly? Thanks.

Of course only your ortho can tell, but in my experience, and that of many others here, things generally get worse before they get better. Sometimes much worse. They will never tell you this, of course. It is all part of the miracle of orthodontics . Your ortho may be trying to reposition the tooth to make room for some other movements elsewhere before he/she brings it back to a more "normal" position." In my darkest/whiniest days I would curse my situation, because as teeth began to move in unexpected ways (at least to me) I realized I would have to complete the treatment or else be left worse off then when I started :gavel: . You may also want to search for posts by Dr. Tam, an orthodontist who visits here from time to tine -- user name is DrJasonTam. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for your answer! I usually pepper my ortho with all possible questions because I want to know everything and that's why I just wanted to check here first and not bug her as much as I usually do. I think I'm starting to get a certain reputation in her ordination...XD It's good to know that others had similar experiences and that I am not some weird case. Thanks for the tip and good luck to you too if you're still wearing your braces :).

The first few months I got braces I thought the same thing too, my teeth were more crooked than they were before i got braces, but after month 6 i could see my teeth straightening! Don’t worry too much, your ortho will make your teeth perfect by the end of your treatment.

It’s true they get often get worse before they get better, but one 8 week long stretch my teeth were looking wonky and like they were going in the wrong direction. I went to my scheduled appointment and my ortho was like whoops definitely didn’t mean to do that and lectured me on how yes it’s nice that I trust his expertise, but that I know my teeth best since I look at them everyday, and that if ever going forward they look really wonky to not hesitate to call him or email him and perhaps schedule an earlier appointment. So it’s case dependent.

Although this needs to be checked yes, it is possible that the brackets were glued wrong. I myself am in the situation where some of my front brackets were glued so obviously wrong, but no matter how much I point it out the ortho doesn't see it! I think it has to do with her sitting by my side and not in front/behind. On the left side the canine is visibly larger than the incisor, as I like it to be) and on the right side, it's the same length or slightly smaller. It's SO obvious! by the time the arch is straightened, I will have visibly "larger" incisors on the right side... couldn't care less though, just want this nightmare over with...
