Torture in the form of the Transpalatal Arch

#1 Post by lophiiformers »

I'm still a week or two from getting my braces put on, but this morning I got both the TPA and micro implant installed as well as 4 premolars removed and this is quite possibly the worst pain I've ever experienced.

I'm handling the extractions pretty well considering all the drool that has been running down my chin without me noticing because of the LA but holy heck the TPA is worse than anything I could possibly imagine. Unlike most TPAs, mine has two metal arms that stick out and will eventually be used to straighten out my back molars using elastics and they are just biting into my tongue. I haven't tried chewing because I'm already choking on yogurt and water and even trying to swallow my own saliva has been a challenge. Not even going into how I can't talk without people mishearing me.

I'm downright miserable and just want to cry right now. I'm really just hoping that this is gonna be the worst part of the whole treatment because I might not be able to take anything worse than this without going insane. Anyway, I'm so sorry for the rant but all I really want to do is sleep through the pain right now but I've so many deadlines I can't ignore right now

I'm so sorry you're in pain...it really isn't fun. Hopefully by now things have gotten somewhat better for you. I have a tongue spinner but one part of it is similar to the transpalatal arch but it sits a bit lower in my mouth (not rubbing against my palette). It hurt my tongue for at least two weeks, I have sore spots everywhere and it felt like my tongue was swollen. I also couldn't eat properly because everything got stuck under the bar.... so frustrating. In a few weeks things got much easier. In the end you adapt.

hi, I got my yesterday and it feels like its wearing away because it's got so much sharper and my tongues a mess. The only solid thing going down my throat at the moment is paracetamol. I've been on a liquid diet and have only had 1300 calories max today and I have a fairly quick metabolism (I usually eat 2300 and have a bmi of 21 and I'm 5'1!).

It feel like a torture device. I've became so much moodier and angry. I feel like kicking a door and I never have before? It's sharp and it feels like a razor brushing & digging against my tongue when I swallow.
