Pain brushing after Braces applied.

#1 Post by JP82 »

Hi there,

So yesterday before work I had my Damon Clears applied to my upper teeth. I didn't eat all day as I had to work, but when I came home I foolishly tried a bag of crisps for my first snack (don't worry, I'm already getting better at the eating thing, hello Soup!) and as soon as I was done saw the mess, so had my first clean, first with an interdental to clean out around the braces and then a normal brush with my sonicare...

What I noticed with the normal brushing was around my side teeth particularly as soon as the brush hit the actual tooth surface around where the brackets were applied and close to the gum line it was instantly painful like raw. It was the same this morning and just now before bed?

Is this expected? To clarify, I have been lucky with any other pain, very little aching so far. But just this specifically, which feels like the surface of the tooth has become super sensitive!??

Hi! I think the pain might be a result of the pressure from brushing your teeth after just getting your braces applied, rather than the surface of the tooth becoming sensitive (I'm not sure if that possible?). And it'll be there for while (for me, it's a couple of days up to a week or so), and then a different tooth or teeth will become more sensitive to pressure from eating/ brushing. Also, I noticed that the vibrations from an electric toothbrush does cause more sensitivity, as compared to using a normal toothbrush, right after I get my braces tightened. Hope you'll feel better soon!

Thanks for the answer? I'm trying to power through, and feel like maybe it didn't hurt as much this morning. I wonder if it's more the vibration of the metal wire beong vibrated onto the tooth surface that is actually causing the sensation? Might try switching to some sensitive toothpaste as well to see if that helps?

Also as of today, about 48 hours in, I have now noticed I'm getting my first cheek catching on the right side. Might be time to get the wax out now.

Fleeting pain and increased sensitivity seems to be par for the course during treatment for a lot of us. "It's always sumthin'" as they say. But, If the pain seems to be getting worse, then a call to your ortho is in order (ASAP) rather than waiting -- better safe than sorry. Best of luck to you!

I also had this kind of thing for a week or so when I first got my braces on - it felt reallllly painful to brush on certain teeth, and there was actually one which when I touched it with a toothbrush it made me want to be physically sick for some bizarre reason... I also had pain chewing on one tooth (a different one, just for fun!) and ended up calling the dentist from the desperation only to be told that it's all perfectly normal. Indeed, after a little while (couple of weeks) everything was fine again. Hang on in there :)
