Impacted Third Molars

#1 Post by Chrissy1066 »

Is there anyone who has gotten braces and still has impacted wisdom teeth? I am 51. My upper ones were removed years ago. My bottom ones are impacted and turned sideways. An oral surgeon told me he wouldn't touch them at my age, unless I had an issue. I am scheduling orth consults and was wondering if keeping them would prevent me from getting braces. Thanks for any input.

I have 1 impacted wisdom tooth but I mentioned from the start that I did not wish to mess with it. Ortho was ok with that, though another dentist said I should remove it as it may cause issues to the second molar. I politely refused until those problems occur I(which may be never,, they've been there for decades). I did extract the other 3; 2 now with braces and 1 a long while ago in preparation for braces, but I never went ahead with it due to moving to another country.

Im in the same situation: same age, same impacted teeth, etc. Ive had my braces about 1.5 years.

I talked to 2 orthodontists, 2 oral surgeons, and my general dentist before starting down this path. All five were okay leaving the wisdom teeth alone. At my age, from my perspective, removing a severe bony impaction was a deal killer.

I agree, removing them would be a deal breaker for me too. I also wondered if your teeth moving from the braces would maybe cause them to flare up. Did your ortho say if the braces might cause problems with the impacted teeth? So far, I have never even had a slight issue with them and I want to keep it that way.
