Class 2 deep bite, facial profile question

#1 Post by Craigxt22 »

Hi all,

I have a class 2 deep bite, and my lower jaw is sitting inwards. Can braces allign my lower jaw with my top one? Is that what the elastics are for? Or will braces only straighten the teeth?

I am self concious of my face side view profile as my lower jaw looks small and misaligned, and would feel more confident if it was corrected.

Thanks

of course i’m not an orthodontist but as far as i know elastics can’t move the actual jaw but after extractions (maybe sometimes an expander) it can move the teeth back which may give the appearance of a straighter profile. This is usually most helpful for people whose mouth protrude outward.

I have a deep overbite too and am currently in elastics. The elastics is slowly opening my bite. As for the jaws, I don't think it changed much, with the exception of my chin area being a little sharper. I think elastics would probably be good for subtle changes and I'm not sure it would make your profile look larger. Have you consulted with an ortho yet?

Thanks,

I've spoke with my dentist who has refered me onto an orthodontist, so still waiting to actually speak with one.

I would have thought that if my my bottom jaw isn't alligned, my deep bite could return after a few years? My teeth need straightening as they are facing inwards to my mouth, but I don't see how just doing that will correct my over bite?

When you get ortho treatment, by the end of it, your bite will be corrected. As for how the ortho will go about your treatment, whether or not surgery is recommended, or extractions, etc, that will be up to him or her to recommend after he or she has examined you, taken your xrays, and study molds.
