Jaw partially locking randomly

#1 Post by cbraces678 »

Does any suffer from their jaw "partially locking" randomly? Since I started wearing elastics this seems to happen to me. My jaw just suddenly decides to restrict how far I can open my mouth lol. There is no pain or anything. It is just REALLY annoying. Nothing seems to obviously trigger it.. maybe my clenching during the night is too much for my jaw sometimes plus the elastics, so it strains it. It will go back to normal really randomly too. Sometimes it happens really quickly, but this time I'm on day 2 of my jaw acting up. I try to exercise it and apply heat to get it to open back up all the way, but it doesn't seem to work. Just all of a sudden, out of the blue, I will notice I can yawn fully or eat properly. It seems to have a mind of its own currently. Does anyone else have this, and have any tips or suggestions?

Sounds like TMJ. Although there is no scientific evidence to show braces/rubber bands can cause TMJ, it can make symptoms worse as your bite realigns.

That actually makes sense to me. Looking back it does seem like every time my jaw becomes restricted there has been some sort of shift in my bite. I recently (last week) had a premolar make a significant rotation which I noticed changed my bite on that side, and now my jaw is restricted. The 2 could be related for sure. I never noticed that. Thanks for your reply! I will wait for my jaw to settle. Luckily it doesn't hurt or anything, it is just a pain trying to shove food in there lol. I have an adjustment tomorrow, so I am hoping it goes back to normal before then.
