How Do Bite Turbos Work? Are My Bite Turbos / Elastics Necessary?

#1 Post by chestrockwells »

I had jaw surgery (Lefort I and BSSO) back in May for an overjet / open bite. I had an incredible experience with the oral surgeon, and the results were amazing. However, my orthodontic experience since then has been TERRIBLE, and the ortho(s) have been extremely uncommunicative.

A few weeks ago, I noticed that my top front teeth hit my bottom brackets, making it so that my back teeth weren't really touching when closed. However, it was maybe by like a 1mm, if that; and I didn't have much difficulty chewing. I went to the ortho to get it resolved, thinking that he would either leave it alone or move the lower brackets down some so that my teeth could touch. However, he decided to put (albeit very small 1mm) bite turbos on the back on my front teeth and instructed me to use elastics on the back teeth. I tried to ask questions about the process, he brushed it off, saying, "My orthodontic training says it will work."

Anyways, I'm most nervous about the front overlap. With these bite turbos in, the bottom teeth are almost entirely visible, with noticeable gaps between other areas. Because I don't really know how bite turbos works, I'm just worried that the combination is going to raise my back teeth to the point where my bite stays as it is with the bite turbos in.

So, I was wondering: 1. How do (front teeth) bite turbos work? or 2. Does it sound like my bite turbos / elastics are necessary? (If you had bite turbos and they were taken off, did your smile stay like it was with the bite turbos in?)

Here are some pictures for comparison: https://imgur.com/a/7tXrsnj

First is without bite turbos. (I think it's evident that my teeth are resting on the bottom brackets.) Second is with bite turbos.

The way your incisors meet in the second photo looks fine to me. It may well be the case that you will need elastics on your molars and premolars for that to become your normal bite without the turbos. I think you can trust your ortho. Your teeth look great, by the way. Good luck with the rest of your treatment
Sectional brace with Damon clear brackets fitted to front 6 upper teeth 3 January 2012
Brackets added to premolars 2 April 2012
Estimated treatment time originally 6-9 months
. Brace removed on 22 July 2013 after 18 months and 19 days
Now enjoying bonded upper retainer plus part time essix/hawley( I have both)
