How long does it take for a callus to form?

#1 Post by drazda »

I have had braces for two days now, and my teeth are a little sore but are not causing much pain at all. However, the pointy pokey things are KILLING me. I have wax but I don't really like to use it. I just wanted to know how long it takes for a callus to form and for your mouth to get used to things poking it. Or does it ever get used to it? Thanks.

I take it you mean the pointy pokey things on the various brackets? I got used to mine after about a week or two. I'm not sure if it's called a callus or just learning how to move your lips over them more easily. I used wax a little for the archwires poking in the back, but I finally got used to that also. Just keep hanging in there and maybe try lip gloss to. That seems to help me alot. Good luck! :-#)

So it doesn't develop a callus? Cause I can never get used to this :( And lip gross/chap stick didn't help. Thanks for the response!

Kiwi gave great advice. I don't really think a callus develops, but your checks do develop some scar tissue and toughen up - until a new adjustment causes irritation to a new spot. It usually takes about 2 weeks for my mouth to adjust to new tooth and bracket positions.
