I. Am. An. Idiot.

Sorry, but I had to rant to someone. So a few days ago, I went to the ortho to get my ligs changed. I have over-excessive holiday spirit, so I went ahead and got red, white, and green ligs. Today for lunch, I had some spicy chicken ramen noodles, which I later found out by looking in the mirror that those noodles probably contained CURRY. So here I am, for the next month, sporting red, green, and neon yellow ligs. I am a complete idiot.

awww I'm sorry about that! I had an unfortunate holiday incident a few years back...I got red and white ligs but two on a tooth so that each lig took up half the bracket. Well, I looked in the mirror and it looked.......

Awful. no other way to describe it. They just make my braces look so obvious almost as if I had buck teeth or something. And it was Christmas, too, so I was going to see all my friends and relatives who I hadn't seen in ages. I just decided to stick it out, but it was embarrasing month to say the least. I hope things get better for you soon! If they really bother you could probably go see the ortho to get them changed-it really shouldn't be a problem.

Good luck, Eve

From what I can work out, surely the multicolouredness disguises the stain?

ie people will just assume that you got red, yellow and green, and not realise the whites are stained.

I don't think the term "buck teeth" is really appropriate for use on this forum as many of us are seeking treatment for teeth like that and don't really like the term having had it used against us throughout our childhoods.

I'll concur on that point. Although I've accepted what I've got and am doing something about it now, I'll admit i still cringe when i hear (err, see) the term. I'm sure no offence was intended (and I hate being the type to try and enforce political-correctness, because normally it doesn't bother me one way or another), but I personally much prefer "overjet". Sounds much... nicer ;)

That being said, you'll notice I still use the term in my website, so maybe i'm just a hypocrite...

Waiting for life to settle down a bit before committing to 3 years of braces, lower jaw surgery, crowns and some whitening.

I don't think any offence was caused by the term 'buck teeth'. I also had 'buck teeth' as a child - I think the term is just used flippantly but not to cause offence especially in this instance.

On the stained lig front I also did an equally daft thing this weekend just 2 weeks after having my up-until-now subtle, clear, behind-the-wire powerchain. Well I went out for a delicious curry with my boyfriend and really enjoyed it as I hadn't been able to eat comfortably for a couple of weeks. Well I got home to find the 'was-subtle' powerchain to be practically glowing in the dark!!

Doh! Can't believe I didn't give it a thought. Ah well I now have a festive party piece in my mouth too for another 6 weeks!!!

I'm sure Evelyn didn't use the term to offend...nobody on this board is mean or offensive in anyway which is so nice

But it did spark off an uncomfortable twinge when I saw a term that is generally used in a derogatory sense to discuss inferior teeth! I feel this is a safe place to discuss orthodontic insecurities...

Gee, I never knew "buck teeth" was a derogatory term. I've never heard it called anything else my entire life. Same with "snaggle teeth". I have both conditions and the words have never bothered me.

I seriously doubt if it was meant in an insulting manner. To be honest, I had never heard anyone but a dentist refer to buck teeth as an overjet. It's all semantics. No harm, no foul. :D
