Heavier wire + pain

#1 Post by fins »

When you get a heavier wire, how long would be considered a normal timeframe for sore teeth, 3-4 weeks?

I got a heavier wire at my last adjustment. I didn't have any sensitivity for the first couple of weeks. Just a tight feeling. Last week I had a couple of sensitive teeth and that lasted about 3 days. Everyone is different, but it seems the majority of people deal with a sensitive tooth here and there for only a few days .

I'm one week from my first adjustment going from first wire to an 18. I checked in the mirror and I think I only have 3 ligs that aren't wire ties. Last week was the roughest week I've had in braces excluding the separator sentence. I'm much better today, but don't know if it's a prescription my dentist phoned in for me or just healing. I was away from home until Friday and when I returned home, my wife gave me some of her recent hydrocodone prescription for her crown. I think she wanted relief for me and from me! Geez, I get braces and ibuprofen, you get that! Anyway, it didn't do much for the pain, just made me have incredibly lurid, vivid wake me up dreams. The prescrip from my dentist is etodolac, an nsaid, and it seems to be really helping me.

When I got my first really heavy wire, I was in absolute agony for five days straight. And by agony, I mean I couldn't be off ibuprofen and I could still feel it even then. It even made me cry and time or two. It ached on and off for at least the next two weeks.

I have my biggest wire yet coming at my adjustment on Monday and I have tears in my eyes already. :?

I got a heavier wire at my first adjustment - the discomfort was minimal.
I have experienced little or no pain to date - 2 months! and am happy about that.

It really seems that each person is different as to how much their teeth complain about moving. Mine seem to have already packed their bags and are sitting in the back seat waiting for someone to drive the car!!!

One thing about a heavier wire, it sure does move teeth fast. :D

If you are asking me, yes I still have it and have the biggest one yet coming on Monday. I'm already warning everyone in advance that they should probably not call me or anything for a week or so. :)

I whined a bit about it, and the asst. patted me on the back and said, would you like some Advil this time? And it was just a lig change on that one and a rotating wedge!
