What is this retainer?

I went today to get my bottoms put on but the denist had to put spaces on my top teeth so that the bands on a retainer would fit around my back teeth. The retainer looks like it fits over my back teeth and the front of the retainer fits behind the back of my front teeth. The front of it is sort of clear and a hard plastic looking thing. Is it something to adjust my bit? Or is it to fix something else? I have the spaces in for a little over a week and then I'll be getting the retainer and bottom braces.

Not yet I don't. I don't have the retainer yet. I thought I was supposed to get it today but he had to put spaces in first. I'll have it in a week.
