Does anyone smoke?
I was just wondering if anyone smoked and had the clear ligs? And do they stain? I go Jan. 9 to get my braces and I smoke so I was just wondering. My ortho said it is not the brackets that stain it is the ligs or bands around them. I will probably get some color but I was still wondering.

As an admittedly holier than thou ex-smoker/ex-chewer.... I'd worry more about what you lungs look like than your ligs.
I still fret that I didn't stop soon enough even though I stopped 20 years ago. I've lost several relatives to tobacco related cancers. It's not a pretty or quick way to die.
But if worrying about staining your ligs will make you quit, then YES! It's gonna stain the hell out of your ligs. YOU SHOULD QUIT NOW!

Now, now. As an ex-smoker you should know that one of the most annoying things to hear when you're a smoker is someone lecturing you about what smoking does. We know what it does. We make our choices, you make your's.
As for the ligs, I don't know. I'm a full fleged metal mouth and have had colored ligs the whole time. Try sticking to something like gray, smoke or silver colored ligs. Not very noticable, and no staining!
Alexa, the smoker who hasn't seriously tried to quit yet for reasons that she cannot figure out, and hates being made feel guilty about it.

Hello I am not for sure, but I imagine that the staining of your ligs will be about the same as eating mustard/curry and not brushing right after! Good luck
*Also, just a note, if you are planning to get any extractions or 'whatever', make sure not to smoke for a few days after!
P.S. :Good job, MMG for quitting!!

Actually, it never bothered me to have people tell me I should quit. You have to care about other opinions for it to be annoying. And I usually didn't care. Yes, I did take the long way around to tell the OP that smoking will stain her ligs. I should have added some smileys in there.alexa wrote:Now, now. But I disagree that you know what it does. I thought I knew what it did. Yes, I understood the ramifications, but I really didn't "know". Having someone that you care about suffer through it gives you the real "enlightenment". Until that point, it's just something that happens to other people.
Keep smoking if you want. Any guilt you feel is strictly self-inflicted. As long as you don't toss the butts on the ground in front of me, puff away with my blessings. I only put guilt trips on people I know and care for. And the brutal truth is that if you die from smoking it won't hardly show up on my radar.
That said, I do hope you find the power to quit. I found quitting to be quite satisfying. And with the price of smokes these days....

I am a non-smoker, and generally loathe the smell of cigarette smoke, but I never really connected smoking and disease in my mind, although technically I knew the risks.Metal Mouth Guy wrote:alexa wrote: I thought I knew what it did. Until my uncle got jaw cancer. He survived, but hundreds of thousands of others don't

Don't make the assumption that I don't have anyone close to me who has suffered with emphasema, cancer or other problems caused by cigarettes. I have, and it's awful. This I don't dispute.Metal Mouth Guy wrote:But I disagree that you know what it does. I thought I knew what it did. Yes, I understood the ramifications, but I really didn't "know". I'm not saying it isn't good to quit, because I think it's absolutely awesome to give up the habit. It's a nasty gross thing to do, and I applaud anyone who takes the step. I do think that you have to want to quit to suceed though, and I'm not ready, despite knowing the danger I'm in.
I didn't mean to start a debate, I just meant that I prefer when people just answer a question when asked it, like are the ligs going to stain?, instead of insisting that the person quit. They have to want to, and that's just something that no one else can make you do if you don't want it for yourself.

But Alexa... I did answer the question. And with a lot fewer words than many other "answers" we see on this board.alexa wrote: I didn't mean to start a debate, I just meant that I prefer when people just answer a question when asked it, like are the ligs going to stain?, instead of insisting that the person quit. The freedom that lets you castigate me for "not answering the question" and to continue to smoke also gives me the freedom to say that I think you're incredibly ignorant for doing so. You have 20+ years of additional medical knowledge and research that I didn't have when I smoked. What was suspect then is now fact.
If you don't have the desire to quit, that's your loss. You roll the dice, you take your chances.
Good luck with that.

ok ok i know the deal yes i am young, but i used to be a serious smoker, i mean pack a day, the whole bit, i started when i was 12, and then last january we had to do a physical fitness test at school, and i couldnt do it, i weezed so bad, and i just couldnt do the things that i used to do, so i quit cold turkey, and i havent smoked a cigarette since, and yes it will probably stain your ligs, that dumb smoke stains EVERYTHING. I know this sounds stupid coming from someone as young as i am, but i was really glad i made the choice to quit after my uncle and my grandpa died of lung cancer from smoking. Not to turn this into a lecture, because i know i hated being told to quit, but it is so worth it!!! I encourage you to try to quit, but to answer your question, yes it will probably stain your ligs, because i mean look what it does to a while wall, stains it rather yellow, so it would probably do the same thing to clear ligs.
Sorry this post turned out so long!!

Thanks alexa! Yes I know that I need to quit but that was not the question I asked. No I don't smoke around people that don't smoke or smoke while people are eating. I didn't want to make a big scene I just asked a simple question "Do ligs stain?" Yes I know that you have the right to speak up but you know somethings you shouldn't go on and on about. That would be like me saying that I was against car pollution and that everyone should quit driving and walk everywhere. Now that wouldn't be fair to you. I'm not putting you down or anything I appreciate you telling me that I get told that all the time but I'm sure some people would take it the wrong way. Some things are better left unsaid.
Thank you everyone for your comments I think I will just get colored ligs!!!

Smoke if you want to. I'm serious. Your an adult and are allowed to make your own decisons. Yeah, I quit a little while ago, but it's because I wanted to. And, with my track record, I'm sure I'll pick them back up. If I wanna smoke, I'm gonna smoke. Period.
(I only smoked 4-6/day anyway.)
Now. Back on track.
I wouldn't go with clear ligs, but colors shouldn't be bad. Who's gonna notice but you that they aren't the same color they started as?
Maybe get in the habit of sticking the cig a little farther (between the teeth) to avoid the direct stream some. (Just don't slobber! Eww! Thats gross! A wet ciggie!)
Or get wire ties! I eat whatever I want and haven't had them changed since they were put on.
Smoke em if you got em.
(Some of these people just can't help but let you know you are wrong, can they?)

Hi -
Just wanted you to know I am a smoker and I have clear ligs. I am a heavy coffee, coke and tea drinker also. I have clear ligs just on the top and metal on the bottom. So far with having mine on for four weeks I have one lig that has stained. It is not that noticeable unless you are right up in the mirror with a very big grin.
Best of luck.
