Braces to close gap

#1 Post by posum »

For those who have seeked orthodontic treatment to close a gap between their two front teeth...has anyone been disappointed with the results?
I am thinking about getting braces but still very consumed with fear and worry that the results will be worse than when I started. I don't really have any issues other than the front gap. Has anyone regretted getting braces after treatment or wound up with problems that weren't there prior to? My estimated time is a year but I'd rather not pursue treatment if theres a chance that I will be unhappy with the results.

Hey posum! I got braces specifically to close the gap between my teeth. So far, I have been nothing but happy! Check out my STORY. You can see everything I've gone through so far and see my progress! Hopefully it will help you in making your decision!

Good luck!

Wow thanks leslie022. i really appreciate the response. its really encouraging to see someone in the same situation. i believe my gap is smaller but it drives me crazy; especially since there is such an emphasis on teeth these days. since there arent any spaces on your lower teeth, how is the ortho closing the top? im still kinda confused as to how the whole process works. i went in for a consult and the ortho said he might have to file some of the bottom teeth to make room to close the top gap.
also, is there a reason why you went with metal instead of ceramics or invisalign?

Yes, there is a reason I did not go with invisalign---I wasn't a candidate. In my case, the back of my top teeth touch the front of my bottom teeth, so there would be no room for the trays. Does that make sense? I decided to go with Damon 3 brackets. They are self-ligating, so I don't have to worry about having ligs to hold the wire in place. They're really comfortable too. I never even considered ceramics. I don't even know if my orthodontist uses them.

Hope this helps!

I didn't have a gap between my front teeth, but my laterals were missing and there were huge gaps where they never grew in...the gaps are almost closed now, and I'm not having any regrets with it, so I think you'll be fine. :D

Leslie, I've had four consultations so far and none of the dentists/orthos have mentioned anything about damon 3 brackets. what are those? i was told i can get ceramics or invisalign...but with all the mixed reviews about invisalign, id rather stick with ceramic and get it done properly and right the first time.

Here is a link that tells about Damon 3's. Note that not all orthodontists use these. Like any bracket, they have to be trained to use them. It is best to go with what your orthodontist recommends. If they like ceramics, then that is probably your best bet. After all, it is the orthodontist that has the skill, not the bracket! I'm not sure about Invisalign, though. You're right, there have been a lot of mixed reviews. It seems you have to be the perfect candidate in order to get the "perfect" smile.
