Extractions....do they hurt?

i had an extraction a few years back, plus one many years before that. the injections are what i hated the most during the procedure. i believe that for bottom teeth, an injection in the roof of the mouth is not required. however, when i had a tooth pulled on the top, i had to get a shot in the roof of my mouth and i HATED it. they explained it to me like this. a) some people have nerves in the roof of the mouth that overlap a lot in the very center. b) some have nerves that slightly overlap the center. and c) some have nerves that don't overlap at all in the center roof of the mouth. for group "c", no pain to speak of. for group "b", slight pain, not too bad. for group "a", its a painful injection. i belong in group "a". but the bright side is that injections are quick! now if only braces were quick..

I had my 4 wisdom teeth removed about 1 month ago and it didn't hurt at all. Maybe it had something to do with the fact that I was heavily sedated intravenously.

I was in and then bam I was out like a light. Next thing you know I was being escorted into my mother's car and driven home. The entire process took about 30 minutes. I was pescribed 800mg of Motrin and Vicodin. I only used Motrin about 3 times because of discomfort but never any kind of pain. Hope this helps.

Honestly, for me it was the most horrifying dental experience. I was 16 & getting braces & need the 4 bi-cuspids pulled. My dentist since I was 3 said he could do it...i still wanted to be sedated. Ya...i was crying & nitrous made it worse! I could feel the pressure & the CRACK God..i can't believe my mom did that to me! 2 yrs later I got my wisdoms out...what a piece of cake...i was sedated intravenously for that....

I reccomend that you get sedated.

i must admit it was easier being at the age of 24

so i guess your age can be a big factor
i mean who likes to see a huge needle being poked into ur gums/mouth when your young! and the feeling of a perfectly fine solid teeth being yanked out with great amount of pressure

These are 2 of the 4 extractions that I had. I didn't get to keep the other 2 teeth because my dentist cracked both of them while he was extracting them, and had to use a screwdriver type tool to take them out.

Anyway these are my premolars from the right side. Sorry about the dry blood.. I washed them as best as I could. I had these extracted 6 months ago.

Oh Dear! I think I'll just get them to hit me on the head!

Most have opted to say the needle is the worst, so I think I'll go along with that. What is life if we don't have challenges? Keep thinking END RESULT!!

Don't worry about it! The needle does hurt but not that much.

Some dentists are VERY good at giving injections and you don't feel a thing, others not so good. They usually put numbing gel in the area even before they inject the novocaine.

I agree, it depends on the doctor...but most dental surgeons are pretty good. I had 3 removed for braces. I had Novocain and gas. When he started it was all a circular motion, round and round he went and the gas just amplified it, what an experience...no pain just a whirling feeling. It was the best extractions ever...if there is such a thing. The healing process went well too, I didn't really need the pain killers they prescribed.

I had a tooth extracted years, like 20 years ago and it was more of a yank and the guy was almost sitting on me. It wasn't fun but it didn't hurt. For this I needed the pain killers afterwards.

I would ask the doctor if they plan to prescribed medicine for after your extractions and if so can you get the prescription called in or filled BEFORE you have them done. You really won't feel like sitting at the pharmacy afterwards and these days it could take a few hours to get the prescription filled. By then you my feel a little discomfort but if you plan for it you'll be ready.

i've never understood how people can get 3 teeth extracted for braces, or 5, or 1.

wouldnt that make either the top or bottom teeth off centre and uneven ????

I had 3 taken, but one was done to match one that was removed years ago....so the 4 balanced out.
