I only had one consult. I went with this ortho because he had a very conservative plan for me. His plan didn't include extractions or headgear (biggest fears) also told me I could keep my wisdom teeth.

My kid's ortho did look at my teeth and bite once and mentioned he could straighten them easily after I had 4 extractions. :yikes: Not officially a consult, but I didn't like his "unofficial" plan so I never considered him.

I can relate Jump. I sort of went along with the process and I wish I had asked more questions before I started treatment. However, I don't have much to complain about. The ortho seems confident and as I said he is very well recommended.

I'm very blessed in having the best dentist in the world!!! He recommended two orthos and I chose the one because he had worked on my Stepdaughter's braces 24 years ago. She really liked him and so her Mom (my partner, now deceased), and they were right.

orthos

#19 Post by science teacher »

I confess I went to one ortho.

My dentist recommended a name for the town I was moving to. That ortho does only kids. The kids ortho's office recommended my ortho who is young and taking over a practice from an ortho that is retiring.

I had done lots of reading and asking before I ever went to the consult. My ortho pretty much told me everything I'd read and what was good and bad about it.

I had a consult as a teen and was thankful to walk away from that ortho. He was arrogant, dismissive and rude. This time around, I had one consult on the recommendation of my dentist and went with that ortho. I'm very happy with im and the office staff. And yes, most (if not all) consults in Australia are fee for service.

I had only one consult because I didnt know you should get more than one. No one in my family ever had braces & so I didnt know much about the process. I wish I would've gotten another consult to see if I could've gotten a shorter treatment time or found an office with better hours.
The reason I have recently gotten upset with my ortho was nothing I could've found out from the consult. They were friendly & assured me they could give me appointments around my work schedule. Of course I did not encounter the rude person til later; maybe they lock her in the back during consults :D

I went to one consult (the ortho I'm going with) because:

1. His recommended treatment seems pretty conservative.

2. He comes highly recommended by a friend of mine who had braces from him, and a parent of another friend who's older brother had braces from him. Both of which had consults with another guy who recommended far more work.

3. The "other guy" is just off the list. I've seen what he's done to kids I know and I just don't trust him.

4. There is a third ortho in Kalispell. Also comes recommended and I considered a consult from him...

5. But Mason was the one my best friend loved so I figured I'd talk to him first. From when I first met his office people, I knew I was where I needed to be... then meeting him confirmed it.

I don't know but I just really fit in with his office. Everyone was super-friendly, and they made sense to me. His treatment plan fit my thoughts and I had no doubt I trusted what he was saying. Everyone was positively delightful. Even once I committed (that day so I could do my records then) it kept up, and they were great.

She managed to get me through the impressions quite well (not a strong point of mine). I was also surprisingly impressed. My friend told me he only did one X-ray, which I found shocking (I've heard of MANY X-rays for ortho) and unbelieveable. Sure enough, she only took one X-ray (a panoramic but still). I asked if that was it for X-rays and she said yes, it was really all he needed and he tries to minimize X-ray exposure.

So overall, GO DR. MASON IN KALISPELL... I CANT WAIT TILL I GET STARTED!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I had 2 consults and I liked them both. The first ortho sold her second practice to the another ortho, whom I ended going with. Both orthos are on good terms, and so are both their staffs, and he was pretty accomodating when it came to where I can go see him, and for emergency visits.

I went to 4 consultations - they were all free. I called one other office and they charged a fee so I didn't make an appt. with them. Keep making consultaion appts. until you find the one you feel most comfortable with. Also ask family/friends of people that you really trust if they can refer you to an ortho. I liked the personality of 2 of the 4 orthos. I had consults with. I chose the orthodontist I'm going to now because I agreed with his treatment plan while the other orthodontist I liked presented a treatment plan that didn't seem like it would give my teeth the maximum orthodontic correction. I also knew a couple people that had gone to my orthodontist and their teeth look great. I know I made the correct choice and if I had to do it again (which I hope I won't), I would choose him again in a heartbeat. I feel I'm able to share any concerns I have with my orthodontist and he is more than happy to answer all of my questions/concerns. The support staff are also very kind.
I also find that it's important that the support staff are easy to work with also.

Good luck and keep us posted.

I don't know about my first consult (I was maybe 13 or 14?) but my consults as an adult were also free, and I had four of them! Each one did a panoramic x-ray of my mouth, and one ortho, poor thing, did all the impressions and everything when I got a little gung-ho and said I was "pretty sure" I was going to go ahead and get the braces on. (I didn't end up going with him, because my husband thought his price was way too high.) I felt pretty silly about the whole thing afterward and hoped that I hadn't been black-listed, like Elaine from "Seinfeld" was with her rash.

Two years after having those wasted impressions, I visited another two orthodontists and went with the second one, who I am very satisfied with!

I have 3 consults scheduled, but might cancel if either of the first 2 feel particularly right. I'm hoping to like the one who's around the corner instead of the others who are a half-hour drive away!
