How many visits to your ortho before being braced?

browneyedgrl- Hi! It looks like your decision to get braces worked out timing wise. I would like to think I would be more patient if it would benefit me through overall cost in the end.
I'm at one week before brace day and the waiting isn't getting any easier. :roll:

Miss Smiley- two appointments with the ortho doesn't seem like much considering how much effort you've put into this so far. Your treatment included a few more specialists though. I like knowing the ortho's can make up their treatments fairly quickly. Unlike the medical field where they test, then consult, then test, then consult... you get immediate action!

He would have braced me that day had I gone to the dentist for a cleaning before hand. The dentist probably would have had me take care of all those things before anyhow.
Upper and lower 1st premolars extracted
Uppers braced 4/6/07 & Lowers braced 4/20/07
ceramic brackets and rectangular arch wires
Est. term: 30-36 months
De-banded: 3/04/09 w/ LBR and U&L Essix

I had my first consult in december '07, and then the molds/x-rays done two days later, then extractions mid-January...and finally braced on Feb 7th.

Seemed like FOREVER :)

I had done alot of work to my teeth before I decided to get braces. I needed to get a crown and replace some old fillings. Check out my story at www below. Mainly I'm doing this because I have TMJ issues (my bite is really messed up) and some minor relaspe.

The waiting is the worst... I set my appointment days after my consult and I think I waited about 7 weeks and that was going through the holidays, it seems like forever. Now I've 5 weeks into it and I've seen movement and my arches widening nicely.

Braces were my final answer, not my original option so I think I fell into the required "before" visits unintentionally.

I saw an oral surgeon back in Nov who was great a writing up the latest changes of my TMJD (bad changes) and informing me that I wasn't a candidate for surgery so there was no hope for me.

I had a normal cleaning scheduled with my new dentist in Jan. After reading the oral surgeon's report and my recount of my medical history, she said I would benefit from braces. I went in for a consult the next week.

The ortho probably would have had me in the following week, but my work schedule keeps me tied up based on my students entering classes. I have to be able to talk to them during those hectic weeks and I don't think I'll be comfortable talking after having braces applied. So I'm waiting until there's a lull between starts before being braced.

That sort of helps me keep things in perspective. I actually had been working up to braces, I just didn't know it at the time. It's been feeling like I went in to the ortho and then bam! ready for braces! :)

Congrats on finally being braced! Looks like you had good turn-around time between the extractions and brace day. That helped, I'm sure. Once teeth start coming out, I think the anxiety level for some of the members here went up. Pulling teeth and NOT yet being braced is scary!

It sounds like time drags for all of us between making the decision and then finally having them applied.

I will certainly be reading your brace story- it sounds like we've got some things in common.

I just wrapped up having the old fillings replaced and having the divots (that's what I've labled the occlusions I've created by my clenching) filled in. I have to say, even splitting out the right and left sides into two visits with a week to rest in between, my TMJ is still inflamed and causing me problems. I hope being braced is a little easier on the joint than those fillings were. :?

I'm always encouraged to hear that many people see movement so quickly! 5 weeks into it and finding changes is great! I'm very exictied to get into and then beyond the "what have I done" stage so I can see things move.

My ortho is taking things very, very slowly- or so she says. She wants to give the TMJ time to adjust to what we're doing without causing me further pain, for which I am very greatful. :) I wonder if that means that it will take longer for me to see movements. :?:
