Powerchains hurt bad!!
I had my adjustment on the 25th, got thicker archwire ontop and powerchain on the bottom and I can't eat and chew properly until now :(
It was the most painful adjustment so far... it reminds me of how I felt the first few months with braces :(

What does getting powerchain mean? does that mean that I'm almost done???

I haven't been here in a long time but I had an awful appointment today and it made me remember this site. I came looking for information on powerchains.

I got my first powerchain (bottom only) today. My orthodontist said it's to close gaps... but I don't think I even have any gaps on the bottom. I had my wisdom teeth out in January (all 4 impacted) and I had one other extraction... top left. That gap on my top left is still not closed after 7 months. I'm scratching my head trying to figure out why I'm not wearing a powerchain on top to help close the gap, but instead I'm wearing one on the bottom where I see/feel no gaps. :Questions:

It's been hours since my appointment and this ranks as the most pain I've been in since getting braces on. I hope this is quick to settle down, as it's my wedding anniversary / long weekend getaway and we leave tomorrow night. I don't want to be skipping romantic dinners in favour of protein shakes.

Oh, and the appointment wasn't awful just because of the powerchain. I waited to see my ortho for almost 2 hours, the hygenist cut my gums opening a Damon door, then she knocked a bracket off while putting on the powerchain (my third bracket replacement in 3 months), I almost threw up when she poked the spit-sucker in the back of my throat (so I needed to sit up and take a quick break), and then she told me I'm more difficult than all of the teenage patients.

Fun times.

I got double chained across the top yesterday and thought it would hurt a ton but it actually hasn't been that bad. Other times I've been single chained and its hurt a lot. I think the wire might have a lot to do with it as well.

I had 2 extractions on the top and am thisclose to getting my braces off. Right now the "big" thing holding up getting them off is a tiny but stubborn extraction gap that still remains. He double chained to help pull it closed by my next appointment. At that point if everything looks good and my regular dentist has given his blessing we will start talking about taking my braces off - probably some time before Christmas.

I dont know who said that they didnt feel any pain from the powerchain....
Do you remember the size/strength of powerchain used? The first time I got a powerchain I did not feel any pain and thought some people were over reacting! Well the next time I got powerchains my opinion changed lol. It turned out the be that the first chain was the weakest one. The ortho then used the closed loop meaning there was little to no space between teeth so it was pulled extremely tight. My teeth were sore like within 5 minutes after they put them on.That pain lasted about 7-9 days.
Right now I have the closed loop chain on top for the past 4 months or so and it doesnt hurt at all, even when I get a new powerchain every 4 weeks it doesnt hurt anymore. Only because Ive been wearing them for so long. All the gaps have been closed for a very long time so I will have them on for about 3 1/2 more weeks and I get the braces off finally!

my powerchains didnt hurt
I think its because I didn't have gaps to close
or the gaps were'nt big.

I have a power chain on the bottom but I don't think it hurts any more than the rest.
