I'm getting braced pretty soon and I'm going for the all metal. I have seen people with the ceramic and I would prefer the metal on me. It's also $600 ($3,600 in my currency) for the ceramic which I don't intend to spend. good luck :)

I was just braced and I have the ceramin ones one the top and will be getting my bottom (metal) in two weeks. You can see my blog titled BraceAdenture I have pics of them. Honestly I love them. I don't have the metal yet so I can't compare but so far I love them. Despite my tetth still being crooked I already feel confident in them. I smile now it's weird. I guess it's because they really aren't noticable and because I am actually getting theis done. Luckily for me the clear were just an additional $300 so I only got them on top. I have been eating messy foods and they havent stained at all. I was told the ceramic ones don't stain as much as just clear :) It's just a vanity thing what do you want. do you want it to be noticable, do you do a lot of talking around people? what would give you more confidence? In the long run choosing clear was a non debateable choice and I am glad I got clear :)

Ceramic vs metal

#18 Post by 50+ »

I have ceramic on top and bottom and I've been very happy with them. I have metal in back and they cause me the most pain rubbing up against my cheek - so who knows...anyhow, as for esthetics - the ceramics are good because no one notices them - and yes, they really don't unless you bring it to their attention. Yes, really! At first, I was ok with getting all metal (because I figured, if I'm going to get them might as well go all out and save some money too...but my husband insisted on the ceramics and boy, I'm glad I listened to him). So the extra cost is worth it because, think about it, you're going to have these in your mouth for a long time and it's ultimately this decision you have to live with. As far as the staining, I see my ligs and bumpers getting yellowed over time - but it doesn't bother me too much. Either way they are going to stain with metal or with ceramic and I know it is temporay until my next visit. The actual ceramic bracket doesn't stain though. Also, as far as discomfort right at the beginning - either way you'll have some discomfort and the inside of your mouth toughens up until the next adjustment - then you use wax then you're all set until the next time.

I hope this was helpful...
50+ ceramics top and bottom as of 2-16-10

I have commented on the ceramic v. metal many times so I will only say that I have ceramic on top and metal on bottom. I hate my metals!
If you like, I can go into more details via pm regarding the difference.

One thing to consider: My ceramic brackets are wider than my metals but my metals stick out more than the ceramic brackets. For those who say ceramics are bulkier, mine are not. I guess it would depend on which brand your ortho uses. I have seen many ceramic photos posted here by other people, and some truly are basically invisible! I highly recommend to everyone considering braces to go all ceramic.

I am a bit disappointed to read some replies about ortho's charging more for ceramic. Luckily, my ortho doesn't charge extra.

Good luck with your decision.

[quote="evilnel"]I have self-litigating ceramics on top and SL metal on the bottom. I don't really notice any difference between the size under my lips. I think the ceramics feel larger width and height-wise, but the depth really feels the same to me, even with all the chains and closing thread I have on top of the wires!

Hi - question about your SL ceramics. When you say height is bigger but depth feels the same as your metals - isn't depth/height the same?? As in, how high off your tooth the bracket projects? Sorry to be dense - just trying to figure out what ya meant. :)

In my case, the decision was made easy when the ortho and assistants told me that people who choose ceramic always seem to take longer (in their office anyways, this isnt in all cases). Also, the receptionist had ceramic and she strongly advised me to get metals, and if she could do it all over again, she would choose metal.
Also, I figured everyone can seem anyways. Paying more and waiting longer for something thats the same, just slightly less noticeable wasnt worth it for me. Dont get me wrong, I am just as self-concious about braces as anyone. I cried on the way home when he told me i couldnt get invisalign. I just didnt think ceramics were that much different than regular braces.
However, like someone said above me, some are really invisible and look great if you keep them really clean, just check what brand your going to get, and make sure you stay away from all staining foods! Alot of people say ceramics dont stain only the ligs do, but I noticed some ceramics just look yellowish and dingy after a while, but like I said that could be because of the brand as well.

Just saw this in another thread thought I would share as its relevant to what I said about ceramic looking yellowish after a while

I think it depends on your need and your personal preference. In my situation, I only needed braces on the bottom. I was told the time would be the same for metal or clear (though most often clear adds more time). I definitely wanted clear. Granted, they don't show, but I figure if they were metal, they would. No one has noticed them on their own--only after I point them out. Obviously, braces on top teeth would be more noticible. I am 37 and work in a professional environment--I wouldn't judge anyone in my office if they showed up with metal braces, but I was too self-conscious to do so.

Height and width refer to the 2d dimensions, so like in measuring a cube you have the height and width (like a square) and the depth is like how much it sticks out in three dimensions. I hope that makes sense.

I think I am gonna have to go with metal. I will be going abroad for 4-5 months and if I get the ceramic I feel like they will be super yellow. I wont be able to change anything for 4-5 months.
