This sounds awful! You poor thing! I think I would definately not opt to have the herbst back in if I were you. I guess the best option would be to see how you feel when you get to a certain stage in the braces and decide if you are happy enough having an overjet or if you want the surgery.

To be honest I think it is pretty bad that the orthos do not warn of possible damage the herbst can do to your jaw. Did yours go through the risks etc? Mine certainly didn't and I am a little annoyed/ worried that I even have a dull ache in my jaw occasionally when before I had know pain it was just cosmetic. I just hope the ache goes and doesn't get worse. I also have a clicking one side of my jaw now that I didn't have before.
I'm not entirely conviced my jaw has stayed in the desired place either. I know when they took the herbst out I had maybe a 1-2mm overjet and now looking it seems to be more like 3-4mm.. I may just be imagining the difference but i think it may have slipped back slightly. Also because the braces have pushed the front lower teeth forward a lot (straightened the arch) I'm not sure how much of the overjet has been fixed with teeth movement and how much difference the herbst even made.

It sounds like you have been through an awful lot. Do you mind letting me know how it goes at the orthos today? Good luck x

Hey....no he didnt go through any of the risks with me when I started treatment. In his defence Im the first person he has treated with the herbst and he has admitted this is kindof a trial for him too!! But he should have known....!! I know what you mean about the tooth movement thing...even after 2 months my overjet had reduced slightly but I have gaps in my bottom teeth behind where the bars attach where the teeth have been pushed forward so I assume when the gaps are closed up my teeth will move back again? My jaw dropped back almost straight away although its hard to say if there has been any change in the jaw position at all (Im guessing not!). Saying that I think it is normal for the overjet to increase again slightly after treatment as everything settles down...thats why they often overcorrect the overjet to allow for this.

My ortho yesterday just said that as I still have some pain he doesnt want to put the bars back in yet until that has settled down...he reckons 4-6 weeks! And he wants to make them shorter to start with so there is less stress on the joints. But...am still not sure I wanna go down that route, I guess I'll see how things go! I can live with the clicking but the pain not so much!! Its worth mentioning your symptoms to your ortho...it does sound like you have a similar problem with the disc albeit not as severe. It may settle down over time but I guess we'll both have to wait and see! I only went to the ortho in the first place cause I wanted straight teeth I never realised I had such a bad bite and all this was going to happen!!!!

How long did you have the herbst in for in total? x

I was completely in the same boat as you before hand. I never really realised my bite was so bad I just thought my lower teeth were really crooked. I had the herbst in for 8 months. I do think it has probably helped with the overjet so I guess in that respect it's good. I hope it works out for you and you get a pain free result next time if you opt to try again. Feel free to msg me any questions.
Merry christmas,
Sarah x
