Hey everyone,

I am set to have 2 upper 2nd premolars removed. I dont want them to go!!

My question is how are you guys having your teeth straightened if you have no room? I really dont want to have to gaps in my mouth for months. My ortho seems to think there is no way round this.

I have quite bad crowding on upper teeth and minimal crowding on lowers. Can you get your teeth "shaved"???

ShySmile, my ortho told me she will make my arch wider to make room for the teeth. Apparently the arch wire does this, but it's so strange to think that a mere wire can make my arch wider. :-/

VA5, I'm curious -- didn't your friend's palate get widened at all? That was what my ortho told me -- that we would try to widen my palate, to help make room. It seems so strange that an arch wire can provide that kind of force, but apparently it's a tenacious little thing! :-/
I don't know, maybe it did? But all I notice is that her mouth is really protruding. But since that was never her concern at all.. her concern was to just straighten her teeth, I guess it didn't bother her. Now since my main concern is my protrusion, I would have never gone her route.

I'm curious to know how many people have true widening of the palate as an adult. I know the arch can be rounded, however my understanding is the palate cannot really "widen" in the true sense. the arch can go from a rounded v shape, to a more rounded u shape, if that makes any sense. and in that way, it can look widened, b/c it is more rounded looking. So, it really depends on how much crowding you have, and how much space you have.

Turning the arch from a narrow v shape to a wider U shape increases the overall arch length which allows crowding to be relieved.

Yes, maybe. Today I was quoted for 'mild crowding' which I feel is worse but hey, I'm not an orthodontist. I have been told no extractio although when I was 12 extraction was a certain if I went ahead with braces. I'm not going to wear an expander but shaving may be something that my orthodontist looks into later on. 1/4mm from the side of each tooth.

Hope this helps.
