I don't really understand some food that people have problems with unless you have bite blocks (which had the first 4 months of treatment) The only thing that I don't eat is super hard stuff, just as a precaution. Salad I have to no issue with. maybe I am just lucky, but I eat cookies, chips, celery. really, the only thign I stay away from also is candy.

Stringy things are a pain in the neck like peaches, nectarines, pineapple, even strawberries. It's a bit better when I cut them into little bits but you still get the strings that drive you demented.

Bread is a pain as it clags everything up.

I don't avoid anything except really, really hard stuff and even then there's usually a way round it!

I do find that I need gallons of water to wash stuff down when I'm eating with braces and also to swill round a bit. I actually get panicked when I'm eating with colleagues or whatever and there's no drinks/water on hand, i then try to choose soup instead!

I love Chinese rice and oh my it just gets everywhere. I avoid it now unless I am at home. My bite is so off now so just about everything is hard to chew so I just stick to soft things. I am on vacation today through Sunday with some friends so lets see how this works out!!!!!! I hate having to be so picky over my food and especially since I will be eating out the next few days.

My braces are adjusting my bite. I'm in the middle of some pretty big changes and currently only 4 teeth actually touch. That is one thing that makes many things really tough to chew. I think many of us are dealing with different issues throughout our braces treatment process. I know I could eat more a couple months ago than I am able to eat now. I'm planning on being able to add some stuff back in when my bite gets aligned more. At least, I have high hopes....

I totally second adding pineapple to the list. Had some the other day at our company picnic. I'm telling you it's worse than spinach the way it wraps around and imbeds itself in the hardware...plus it's yellow and much harder to see than spinach.

I think the worst part is eating in public and then having to ask someone if there's anything stuck in your braces before you can smile comfortably. Last thing I want is to laugh with someone only to have a big green glob displayed right up front!

I've given up on asparagus, celery and bok choy. Actually I almost choked on some bok choy in my pad thai - it got caught on a back bracket just as I swallowed , and ended up caught halfway down my throat...not fun.

I still eat sandwiches from time to time, but most of the time they're not worth the feeling of having bread jammed up in my front brackets. Which sucks, because they used to be my lunchtime staple and now I'm at a loss for what to take to work every day.

Broccoli and spinach are the hardest for me to eat and then to clean.

I have no issue with chicken and rice m actually chicken was easier for me to eat during the first 3 months than eating a sandwich !!

Kashi Roasted Almond Crunch bars. Unfortunately that's also what I've eaten for breakfast every day for the last few years.

What do you mean no pizza or potato chips?? Eeek, that is really bad news for me because i love to eat pizza and eat it at least once a week now. I'm not so sure how I'm going to deal with all these forced dietary changes. I'm already a diabetic on insulin and so my diet is very carbohydrate restricted as it is. Believe me, THAT too me about 5 years to get adjusted to. I can see that wearing braces is going to be a real pain in more ways than one!

Wow, I've read the whole thread and all the foods I like seem "difficult". I've no idea what I'm going to eat apart from soup and yoghurt! Perhaps I need to invest in one of the cookbooks listed in another thread....

Yeah, kind of discouraging, isn't it? I haven't actually purchased any of those cookbooks mostly because i basically gave up cooking after my children moved away from home and my husband died. But, I really can't see living on canned soup and yogurt for the next two years so I may have to re-think that. Another thing to worry about. Ugh.

No need to worry. I literally eat anything I want. Steak, crunchy granola bars, carrots, the works. Your teeth might hurt a little at first but biting down actually seems to make them feel better overall. Don't let anything stop you from enjoying yourself!

I'm going to follow whatever advice my orthodontist gives me. If he tells me I shouldn't each corn chips, then I won't. As much I will definitely hate having to give up some of those foods that I love and enjoy, I'll do it if I have to. I'm glad to know that you have not had to sacrifice too much of what you eat. But, judging from the postings I read on this forum, I think that you're in the minority. But, good for you!

You know what, I don't know if I was perfectly honest. There's one food I saw but didn't get because I was afraid of it: Caramel Apples.
I might have salivated a little when I saw them, but I didn't purchase them because I know it'd be a baaaaad idea.

Oh, I'm sure that almost every person who wears braces salivate when they think of or look at a caramel apple. I haven't actually eaten one of those in years but I'm sure I'll be craving one when my braces go on!
