I think it depends on the type of expander (there are multiple, which I didn't realize until doing research after I had mine in already). I had a turn key one that younger patients usually have. I achieved some expansion after a few months of wearing the device, but we ultimately stopped because my teeth started tipping outwards.

I will be having (at least) upper jaw surgery that will widen my palate and move my maxilla forward, so the palate expansion was just a starter I guess.
