djspeece wrote:Congratulations on those extractions, I think this may well be the toughest part of the whole thing. Not saying it is going to be a cake walk from here on out, but I know after I had my two extractions -- which took 90 minutes because (a) I have long roots and (b) dense bones -- braces were not such a big deal since there was no bloodshed involved with braces. The extractions were horrible, though. Even the dentist doing the extractions said they were the toughest he had ever encountered. Great. But I digress. The extraction sites will start to get better with some time, just follow the post-op instructions on what to do and avoid. Hopefully you're not as careless as me and once the pain gets better you forget about them and then bite into something the wrong way. Big ouchy and bad words. Very bad words. The whole orthodontics thing is an adventure, putting it mildly, but you'll get through it. I saw one of my colleagues in braces the other day and it was like she and I were part of a special club or something. My braces are off now but we did have a nice chat. My big advice was to eat fearlessly.
I am hoping that in two years' time you will really feel that you have accomplished something special, because you will have. You know there are going to be good days and bad days and that sometimes things will get worse before they get better. That surprised me for some reason, at the time. I recall sitting in my office when I first realized it, performed my patented "eye roll" and sighed "Oh boy here we go, dumba**!" About that time I found this site and found reassurance that my teeth weren't going to pop out of my mouth or something.
Best of luck to you!
Thanks for this, it was a great read and has me feeling more positive for sure. I'm going attempt to upload pictures, just trying to figure it now. They are horrid let me warn you

Thanks, I will keep you updated.
Today I'm feeling better in terms of extraction pain, however I am now concerned with how the bridge will move, has anybody ever had braces with a bridge? The bridge I have is just a two unit.
Just eaten for the first time. Pain isn't bad, just feels tight. No wire poking me or anything, so far so good. My only concern right now is the worry of breaking a wire or a bracket. I have wire going across an extraction site, it scares me that it may snap.

I had my lower first premolars extracted before braces. I ate pretty gingerly at first, but I never had a wire break while it went across my extraction sites. Food got caught in there like crazy though, so be sure to rinse really well after eating.

Thanks mate, I started to think it shouldn't be like that but obviously it's ok. By the way my artho gave me Damon clear bottoms for free as a good gesture I guess. So happy with that. As I signed for Damon Q and it was planned for metal bottom. First day want at all bad. No pain and no mouth sores.
I have to say your photo doesn't look that bad. If you go on the net and search for before and after ortho photos you'll see some really scary teeth and some amazing results. I have a lot of confidence this is going to work out well for you.
